the station, 10 degrees of course error may be a mile
or less. The course needle gets more sensitive as the
station approaches the navigation station. With R-NAV,
the typical course width is 10 miles, regardless of the
distance from the waypoint.
When it comes to testing or troubleshooting an R-NAV
system, keep in mind R-NAV will not work unless the
VOR and the DME are operable. A technician may need
to troubleshoot and repair one or both of those systems
before turning his or her attention to the R-NAV. In
addition, you will need both a VOR test box and a DME
test box.
Although not sufficient for certification, two test
triangles are useful for checking the operation of an
R-NAV system. We recommend testing both triangles
before sending someone on a certification flight. The
first is a variation of the triangle discussed previously,
but with each side at 20 NM. This triangle is useful for
testing bearing, which comes out to an even 45 degrees
with a " to " indication. The distance is the square root of
800, which does not work out even, but you can expect
the distance to the waypoint to read between 28.2 and
28.3 NM.
The second triangle is one with a 3, 4, 5 ratio. In this
case, place the waypoint (enter into the R-NAV) 30 NM
north of the navigation station. Place the aircraft (enter
into the test equipment) 40 NM west of the navigation
station. The distance will work out to be a perfect 50 NM.
In this triangle, the bearing will not work out evenly. You
can expect the needle to center between 36 degrees and
37 degrees with a " to " indication.
Few, if any, VOR/DME R-NAV systems are sold as
new these days; however, if I had one in my aircraft,
I wouldn't want to get rid of it. Next month, we will
examine ways to find an airport. q
