A
s the editor of this monthly magazine, I
am often asked by readers to help them
" find something " in Avionics News. The
questioner typically wants basic assistance in finding
coverage about a certain topic, product, individual
or company. Usually, the individual recalls reading
a specific article but doesn't remember when it was
published or how to quickly find it.
A quick and efficient search often
brings accurate answers to the curious
individual. Yes indeed, there is an
archives system in place to help readers
find what they seek. In fact, it's been
available since the first digital edition
of Avionics News was published in
November 2011 - nearly 12 years ago.
This is not the first time the Avionics
News archives has been publicly noted,
but I continue to be surprised with the
lack of awareness for this valuable feature. With that
in mind, here's a brief tutorial on how to research and
find the treasures you seek from the archives.
The first step in your research is to open a digital

edition of Avionics News at avionicsnews.net - it can be
the current issue or any prior edition. In the flip-page
format you just opened, simply click on the menu (three
stacked lines) in the upper left of the desktop screen to
access more functionality and features. This will take
you to a menu that literally asks, " What would you like
to do? " At this point, click on the magnifying glass next
to the " Search " feature and enter your keywords. This
is where you must apply those Google search skills that
you have honed over several years.
To illustrate a specific example, suppose you want
to search for all-time coverage of lithium-ion batteries.
Enter those keywords and then choose the appropriate
dropdown to search any of these words; all of these
words; or the exact phrase. Finally, choose the desired
option you want to search, which will either be this
issue only or the entire historical archives.
Incredibly, you will discover the exact
phrase " lithium-ion batteries " has been
noted 72 times across 140 issues dating
back more than a decade. Each of the 72
search results produces a direct link to the
specific page it's mentioned. Now just for
fun, go back and repeat the process, but
this time search the exact phrase " lithiumion
battery " (singular battery instead of
plural batteries). This search will produce
another 59 all-time notations with links to
every single mention.
Incredibly, not only will your archives search results
appear extremely similar to a traditional Google
search that crawls the entire World Wide Web, but it is
conducted in a target-rich environment only applicable
to Avionics News. Thus, you are eliminating all the
outside noise, literally making the Avionics News
digital archives your go-to resource to find the content
you need, when you need it.
Now you know, so let the searches begin! q
