the altimeter, if you bring in an
ARINC 429 input from your
primary system, you can adjust
the barometric pressure setting
on one instrument, and it will
automatically synchronize and
update on ours, so it has some nice
back and forth, " Williams said.
" The altimeter is also an
encoding altimeter, which means
it produces an output that tells
whoever else is listening what
altitude you're at, so you can
broadcast that information
to other pieces of equipment
as needed, " he continued. " It
has some real improvement in
interface capability between other
equipment in the aircraft if you
want. If not, they offer perfectly
good standby capabilities all by
themselves. "
Installation is simple and
straightforward. The new Flex
standbys can be easily installed in
one day, resulting in less downtime
for aircraft. The digital instruments
fit into the existing 2-inch
mechanical positions on the panel,
so technicians don't need to cut the
panel, and they also can utilize the
existing secondary or emergency
bus.
" You can simply configure
the unit, so it makes life much
easier for avionics shops doing
installs, as well as reducing cost
to the customer, " Williams said.
" If anyone has had to pay for
more than one repair on an old
mechanical instrument, these
should be the last instruments you
would ever have to put into your
aircraft from that standpoint - the
reliability is that good. "
