location can be seen between a
Cirrus SR 22 and a Boeing 787.
A vertical stabilizer mounted
antenna on an SR-22 would be
approximately 8 feet off the
ground. The same location on a
Dreamliner would be 55 feet. At
the decision height, where the
pilots make a go/no-go decision
to land, the fuselage of an SR-22
would only be about 8 feet below
the decision height, whereas a
Dreamliner fuselage would extend
over 55 feet below the decision
height. Combine the size of a 787
airframe with a lower decision
height of a category II or category
III landing system, and a tailmounted
antenna could cause the
wheels to make impact before the
decision height had been reached
by the tail.
In terms of system theory and
configuration, the glideslope is
virtually identical to the localizer.
The whole system could be
described as a localizer tipped on
its side. Like the localizer, there
will be a radio receiver connected
to a converter, which drives an
indicator. Unlike a localizer, the
converter portion of a glideslope
system is not found separately
from the receiver. Figure 2 shows a
generic remote-mounted glideslope
system.
Compared to localizer operation,
the indications are more sensitive to
differences in the depth of operation
between 90 Hz and 150 Hz. In
addition, glideslope has a higher
percentage of modulation since there
is not any identifying tone.
The indicator could be a
traditional course directing
indicator, a horizontal situation
indicator, or a symbol generator for
an EFIS display. Aside from some
rare instruments designed for test
purposes, a glideslope will not have
its own instrument.
On a CDI, the glideslope
indication is on a horizontally
oriented pointer. On an HSI, you
will find the glideslope indication
using pointers on the left and right
side of the display. Most EFIS
presentations will be an electronic
representation of a CDI or HSI
indication.
There are no separate controls
for the glideslope and no glideslope
audio. The glideslope receiver will
activate with the navigation system,
and the navigation control head
will send frequency information to
the glideslope receiver. Glideslope
configurations can create some
confusion on the part of pilots
and, sometimes, technicians. From
the pilot's seat, other than an
indication on the CDI, glideslope is
virtually invisible. This invisible,
in-the-background operation can
create communication problems
between pilots and technicians.
More than once, pilots have written
a complaint about ILS operation
laterally (localizer), while calling it
a glideslope problem. The converse
is also true.
