missions management software system, which has
been specially tailored to meet the needs of the Sky
Warden program. Savoie explained that it's part of
the company's commercial MMS solutions offerings,
which integrate all of the federated avionics and
components to provide seamless operations for the
flight crew.
" It greatly simplifies some very complex
operations, " he said. " For example, if the front pilot
is looking at something in a sensor or camera on the
helmet-mounted display system, they can hit a button
on the throttle, and the system will drop a point on
that target. You then just tell the system to 'go to that
target,' and fly a SAR (search and rescue) type pattern,
and the (Garmin) autopilot will put the airplane in a
circuit around that target - all completely digital and
all FAA certified.
" Having FAA certification for all the systems is
critical to the success of our program. We're basically
updating user-defined waypoint capabilities, and once
you certify that one mechanism, all these other systems
work in the avionics suite. It just makes it all so much
easier. "
While creating the new federated cockpit
configuration was undoubtedly a significant hurdle, it
wasn't the only thing required to turn a commercial ag
plane into a frontline warrior.
" We did a bunch of other changes also; we added a
steerable radome up behind the rear cockpit, " Savoie
said. " We call it R2-D2 because there's a cover that
makes it look like a droid on the X-wing fighter.
