Gogo Business Aviation
Once again a valued sponsor of the AEA New
Product Introductions, David Salvador, Gogo's vice
president, aftermarket channel, brought attendees up to
speed on his company's implementation and expansion
of its 5G network for airborne communication. Gogo
offers a flexible suite of products and systems for
airborne connectivity, in-flight entertainment and voice
calling. Its equipment is installed on thousands of
business aircraft of all sizes and mission types, from
turboprops to globe-spanning jets, including large
fractional, charter and corporate operators.
The big news from Gogo is that it will expand its
developing Gogo 5G network into Canada, providing
additional coverage to business
aviation operators in North
America. Gogo 5G leverages
the company's best-selling
AVANCE airborne platform,
allowing customers to
realize return on their
in-flight connectivity
investments now, before
Gogo 5G service is expected
to launch commercially in the
fourth quarter of 2023, followed by
the network expansion into Canada in 2024. The AVANCE
platform provides an easy upgrade path to Gogo 5G and
Gogo's future low Earth orbit solution.
The company said Gogo 5G is expected to deliver
approximately 25 megabits per second throughput on
average, with peak speeds in the 75 to 80 Mbps range.
That kind of bandwidth will facilitate data-heavy
applications like video conferencing, live TV and
gaming, according to Gogo.
Also, and as announced in 2022, Gogo is going
global in partnership with OneWeb, a provider of highspeed
connectivity via low Earth orbit satellites. " As
it stands today, there is not a single, high-performance
satellite solution out there that allows it to be installed
on everything from a King Air to a BBJ, and this
product will be available to do that, " Salvador told
attendees. In addition to upgrades for in-service
AVANCE systems, Gogo will offer a stand-alone
satellite solution via its existing Smart Cabin system.

Innovative Advantage
Bill Dalton, technical program manager for the
company, told attendees at the AEA Convention, " We're
experts in aircraft audio, video and data technologies.
Our main product is an AVDS Node, for audio and video
distribution systems. We have 8,000 units in the field;
it's a truly hybrid system with no disadvantages. It's a
1,200 gigabit per second fiber backbone, with no single
point of failure, and it's
extremely scalable. And
it's field proven. We're
on 1,800 aircraft
flying, with an
in-service MTBF
of over 25,000
hours. We're on all
Gulfstream models,
and aftermarket aircraft
up to 747s. "
AVDS Node
Additions to the company's product line
include a Bluetooth adapter with new features. " It's
been set up as a receiver for quite some time, (but now)
we have a client software tool that you use to give it a
user-friendly name, " making it easy for passengers to
find when connecting their devices. " There's no complex
pairing; it's always in pairing mode. Simply find it
in your device and start streaming audio to the IFE. "
Another new feature allows the company's Bluetooth
adapter to be either a receiver or a transmitter, sending
audio to compatible devices.
" The next thing is HDMI consumer electronic
control, a protocol that allows compatible devices to
communicate back and forth with your TV or other
devices " using a standard remote control. " We've
integrated those controls seamlessly into the IFE system
... The exciting feature of it is that now, if you receive
a PA (public address), we can actually pause those
downstream devices. That control wasn't there before, "
Dalton told attendees.
Innovative Advantage also offers a new signal
converter box, or SCB, which allows passengers to
distribute video to any cabin monitor on the IFE system
or stream it to PEDs in the cabin.
