GAP ANALYSIS
T
ake a minute to recall how you entered the
field of aviation and think about the gaps
you had early in your career in education,
training and experience. Now consider how you filled
those gaps throughout your years in the industry. I'd
like to think you relied on the pages of this magazine
along with annual training at the AEA Convention,
Regionals and headquarters for some
of your professional development. I
imagine there were other sources like
on-the-job-training, apprenticeship,
mentorship and self-study as well. With
any combination of the above examples,
your path to success was paved with the
understanding you had a license to learn.
The learning that took place during your
career may be unique, but the knowledge
gained is certainly worth sharing with the
next generation.
This month, Avionics News highlights
MIKE ADAMSON
the future technicians and leaders of the avionics
industry with profiles of the 2023-24 scholarship
winners beginning on page 56. Of more than 300
applications, these 21 individuals shared a passion for
their career choice and demonstrated excellence in
their education in order to be selected for the AEA's
annual awards. Nearly $40,000 will be distributed this
year to these future technicians, engineers, and aviation
industry leaders. Since its inception more than 30 years
ago, the AEA Educational Foundation has awarded
nearly $2 million in scholarships and grants. Funds for
these scholarships are generated through sponsorship,
fundraising activities and proceeds from the training
courses held at AEA headquarters. In short, technical
training is not only professional development, it also is
workforce development at the AEA.
Take a minute to read the profiles of these young
women and men and consider how they could fit into
your business as part of your workforce
solution in the coming years. Consider
how your business can help fill their
knowledge gaps and how the AEA can
assist you with our apprentice program and
our regulatory and technical training at the
AEA Convention, Regionals, headquarters
and online. We are constantly looking to
improve our training programs to help
your new hires get up to speed.
Additionally, the AEA workforce
development committee has developed
a short survey to identify the industry's
needs for future technicians. Your feedback will
help narrow the focus on developing training that is
relevant to where your business is today and where it's
