Collection Forum

The journal is soliciting new submissions for the 2019-2020 Volume 33 of
Collection Forum. Members who have
presented at the SPNHC annual meeting
are encouraged to submit their manuscripts for consideration, particularly
those who received travel awards and
support from the society. The 2018 Volume 32 is being published online at https://collectionforum.
org as the issue in progress. Current topics include conservation of subfossil bones, curating a historic seed collection,
long-term storage using gelatin capsules, and documentation
of a historic fin whale skeleton in preparation for a move. The
goal is to have Volume 32 out in print by the end of the year.
Online access to the current year's issue in progress requires

with any access concerns.
Many thanks to Associate Editors Janet Waddington, Scott
Rufolo, Marcy Revelez, Mariana Di Giacomo and Genevieve
Tocci for their invaluable assistance in tackling manuscript
submissions. Thanks also to numerous reviewers, and to
Assistant Production Editor Hayley Singleton. The journal
depends on the hard work and volunteer service of these individuals who dedicate their time and expertise to ensure that
current collection management techniques and best practices
can be shared with the community.

SPNHC Leaflets

A new SPNHC Leaflets publication is available in the current
newsletter, under the editorship of the new leaflets editor,
Breda Zimkus. The article shares an improved design for the
storage of fluid-preserved specimens in small to mediumsized containers with the use of manufactured aluminum
trays. The SPNHC leaflets are a series of single-topic, short
papers on various technical aspects of collections care, management, preservation and conservation. A typical SPNHC

Leaflets contribution describes and suggests practical means
for solving a technical problem or issue. SPNHC leaflets are
designed as training and education tools for natural history
museum collection professionals and students in museum
studies programs. If you are interested in publishing a leaflets piece on natural history collections, please contact Breda

at editor@spnhc.org.

Past Journal and Newsletter Issues

A reminder that the previous issues of the newsletter and the
journal are available online at www.spnhc.org. Thanks to
membership online access assistant Sara Ketelsen for maintaining the membership lists to ensure that paid members
have access to the most recent issues of the journal and to
Carol Kelloff for maintaining the archives. For any access

Books

Preventive Conservation: Collection Storage
The book, Preventive Conservation: Collection Storage, by
Lisa Elkin and Chris Norris, Special Publication Editors,
is now expected to be released by September 6, 2019. This
monumental effort of 940 pages has taken over seven years to
produce and will provide state-of-the-art best practices covering the storage of all types of collections, including science,
fine and decorative art, history, library, archive, and digital
collections. The book concentrates on preventive conservation and emphasizes a risk management approach. The book
will be available on the American Institute for Conservation
(AIC) website at https://store.culturalheritage.org.
Anyone who submitted a pre-order will receive an email with
a 15% discount coupon to purchase the book through the AIC
website. AIC members will also be eligible for the discount.
