Book Reviews
Were it not a true story it would be a great read as a crime
novel.

Curating Biocultural Collections:
A Handbook
2014, J. Salick, K. Konchar and M. Nesbitt, eds.
(Kew Publishing, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in
association with the Missouri Botanical Garden, St.
Louis, ix + 406 pp.)
ent). I was impressed by the group taking this project into
their own hands. I recognized the earnestness of those there
to produce a needed product; they knew the questions, and
were intent on developing the best answers and then making
them available (via this publication) to all. While do-it-yourself projects may often be lacking in the long run, this one
succeeds. Plus, the resulting compendium is pertinent to the
natural history collections field overall, so we all benefit.
Ann Pinzl, Independent Museum Professional, Carson City,
Nevada.
The editors begin by saying that
we must think broadly when
thinking about Biocultural Collections, which are composed of ethnobiological specimens, artefacts
and documents, and consider their
origins in ethnobiology, economic
botany, ethnography, archaeology,
geography, agriculture, medicine,
linguistics, history, art and so on.
They might best be summarized as
repositories for plants and animals
used by people, products made
from them, and/or information
and archives about them; they are found in large and small
institutions.
The breadth of topic is matched by the breadth of coverage
(26 chapters in 5 sections) with 53 contributing authors. The
early chapters deal with a variety of object types and their
curation such as herbarium specimens, ethnobiological products, paleoethnobotanical materials, seeds, DNA specimens
and xylaria/wood. The next chapter set covers ethnobiological data and archives, followed by a series on perspectives
on biocultural holdings that discusses indigenous and western views. The final chapters look at the broader impacts and
value of biocultural resources in other venues, e.g., research,
exhibits education, art museums. Throughout, the handbook
makes liberal use of color photographs, usually from a few
well-established featured collections.
Although there are book editors and chapter authors, perhaps increased recognition is due to the practitioners already
in the field, that is, the Biocultural Collections Group who
worked to solidify and codify the body of knowledge they
had been assembling. I attended the Ninth Annual Biocultural Collections Meeting (St. Louis, MO, 2011; Botanical
Society of America, Society for Economic Botany), where
each proposed chapter was reviewed (with authors presSeptember 2019 * 23
