attached label holder. Compared with the Field Museum tray,
the metal is twice as thick (0.063"/1.6 mm vs. 0.032"/0.8
mm) to resist twisting in the absence of corners. In addition,
the ANSP tray dispenses with the folded hem formed on the
top edges of the Field Museum design because the thicker
metal is more rigid and does not leave a sharp edge. Three
sizes were chosen for the ANSP, of equal 376 mm (14.8")
length (Figs. 4, 5): 1) 110 mm (4.33") wide, 51 mm (2") high,
2) 90 mm (3.54") wide, 41 mm (1.6") high, and 3) 50 mm
(1.96") wide, 41 mm (1.6") high.

Below: Fig. 5. The ANSP design in the small size with a mixture of 2-oz (59 ml) bottles and 4-dram (15 ml) and 6-dram
(22 ml) vials. If needed, full or partial center dividers can be
made from strips of Kydex.
Testing and Development
Prototypes of all three sizes were made in both aluminum
and stainless steel and handling tests were conducted using

the maximum load of full containers possible in each. Tests
consisted of loading trays of all three sizes with the maximum
possible weight, using real containers filled with 80% ethanol solution, which is roughly 20% lighter than water. In the
aluminum version the largest tray with its maximum loading
of three 32-ounce (946 ml) and one 16-ounce (473 ml) jars is
still slightly lighter than a single gallon jar.
Labeling
The ANSP trays do not have a label holder, so computergenerated labels cannot easily be used. As the collection is
ordered by catalog number, however, no taxonomic or other
content- related information need be displayed (and constantly updated) in the collection. Instead, the fronts of the trays
are simply marked with the range of catalog numbers they
contain. Labeling is accomplished by wrapping medical cloth
tape around the tray end and writing on it with permanent
marker (Fig. 6). The same materials have been used to label
ANSP jars since the 1970s and have proven durable over that
time. Possible alternatives include label holders that clip on
to the upper edge of the metal or that are retained by screws
or rivets.

shelves and retained by the uprights. Labels on the trays
show the lowest and highest numbers, making it unnecessary to arrange the bottles numerically.
Shelf liners
Fluid-preserved collections that are arranged on shelves,
whether static or in compactors, are normally required to
have a lip or low rail at the front edge of each shelf that
prevents jars from being accidentally knocked off or sliding
off if the shelf moves, such as in an earthquake. In the ANSP
