I knew I wanted to work in a museum ever since I was in the
3rd grade and discovered a trilobite fossil on a fishing trip
with my grandpa. My family took me and my trilobite to the
Milwaukee Public Museum where we met a geologist. He
identified my trilobite and explained that it lived in Wisconsin
during the Silurian Period, 430 million years ago. At that
time, a shallow, tropical sea covered the Midwest and was
filled with animals and reefs, some of which became fossils.
How he knew so much from just looking at my fossil fascinated
me-it seemed like magic. He took us to the basement
of the museum and gave us a tour of the geology collections. I
was amazed seeing all the cabinets and drawers overflowing
with fossils and minerals. Why all of this was not on display I
will never understand. Majoring in geology, I earned a Bachelor
of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin -
Madison and a Master's of Science degree from Oregon State
University. Ever since college graduation (over 25 years ago)
I have been working with museum collections.
