Crop Insurance is Critical
to This Idaho Family

Idaho farmer Jamie Kress and her family have
been farming in southeastern Idaho for more
than 100 years. Her children are the fifth generation to grow up on a farm in that area.
Located in the southeastern corner of Idaho and situated in a high desert environment
more than 5,000 feet above sea level, the town
of Rockland can be a difficult location to farm.
Extreme weather has the potential to quickly
devastate crops and that is why Jamie and her
husband, Cordell, buy crop insurance to protect
their family farm.
Last June, the temperature at their farm was
well below freezing for the better part of the
night. Jamie and Cordell spent the better part of
that night not sleeping.
" It's really frustrating when all of your blood,
sweat and tears is out there on the line and Mother Nature is calling the shots at that point, " Jamie
said. " I am grateful for crop insurance, though,
because it protects you from the risks of Mother
Nature. It means if you have a crop failure, or you
have a yield that is not what it could have been,
you won't be out of business. "
Jamie went to school for accounting and Cordell is an engineer. Their backgrounds help them
make data-driven decisions about what works
best for their farming operation.
" Good decisions are critical where we
farm, " she said. " Our farm is based around
wheat and safflower. We also incorporate mustard and dry peas and are trying to work a little
bit with winter canola. "
The Kress farm sits in an area where irrigation
water is unavailable, so they rely on rain for everything they grow.
" The protection crop insurance provides
helps us manage weather risks, and the markets,
so we can stay in business, " Jamie explained.
