three different stages: 1) vegetative, 2) at the start
of flowering, and 3) approximately two weeks
prior to harvest. Also included were treatments
at the three stages that simulated hail breaking
one-quarter, one-half or three-fourths of the
limbs on the plant.
The results from the two locations were similar.
There was little difference in the dry matter
yield for the treated plants compared with the untreated
check. Yields ranged from 0.71 to 0.92 kg
dry matter per plant in Kentucky, and from 0.27
to 0.61 kg dry matter per plant in North Dakota.
PEANUT Plant Damage
Georgia
NCIS developed research trials in 2018 at
Tifton, Ga., to evaluate plant damage effects on
peanut production. Researchers applied 33, 66,
and 99 percent plant damage at 30, 60, 90, and
120 days after planting. These planting dates
represent a wide range of growth stages from
early vegetative to near maturity. Results from

Popcorn differs from field corn in that the 6th
leaf attaches to the first noticeably elongated
internode. The research being conducted at
Ohio is verifying this as a side project.

Nebraska, Ohio
Popcorn defoliation research was initiated
in Nebraska and Ohio in 2020 as a follow-up to
stand reduction research completed in 2020. The
trial consisted of applying defoliation treatments
of 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent at the 10- and 15leaf,
and tassel, blister, and soft dough growth
stages. Results from the first year of research are
presented in tables 9 and 10. Two additional years
of research trials will be conducted.
Field corn with 50 percent of plants green
snapped above the ear at tassel. While the ears
of treated plants are considerably smaller, losses
averaged at approximately 21 percent indicating
that unsnapped plants respond to more light
and compensate for the damaged plants.
all years suggest that losses increase with 1)
increasing plant damage, and 2) up to 90 days
after planting (Table 8).

POTATOES-CREAMERS
Plant Damage
Washington, Wisconsin
The potato industry is developing different
types and varieties of potatoes to meet consumer
tastes. " Creamer " size potatoes are the most recent
type developed for consumption in either
processed meals or as an easy, quick side dish.
They are smaller, with a short growing season,
