VisitWebsite by Laurie Langstraat, NCIS After back-to-back bad weather years, America's farmers and the crop insurance industry were praying for a much calmer year for 2013. The weather cooperated, for the most part, as indemnities were far less than 2011 and 2012. But even though the weather was less volatile, the crop insurance industry remained in the public spotlight. Everyone had high hopes that the Farm Bill would finally get through Congress, giving farmers the stability they ag-risk.org needed to make business decisions for the future. And though, as of this writing, the Farm Bill is being debated in the Conference Committee, it looks like it won't be final until just in the knick of time. Many of the events of 2013 were "standard" activities for NCIS and the industry. Regional/state meetings, loss adjuster schools, loss cost analysis, dealing with the seemingly never-ending procedural changes, processing issues, and many others. But other events, such as the 16-day government shutdown and the endless Farm Bill debates and votes, don't happen every year, thankfully. So, we work through these events, and to the best of our ability, provide support and guidance to our member companies as we strive to provide the best possible crop insurance product to America's farmers and ranchers. This article is a recap of the various activities that NCIS was involved in in 2013, many Dr. Laurence Crane, NCIS, with the farmers and ranchers who attended the risk management education workshops at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in the first quarter of 2013.
