TODAYcrop insurance Drought & Adjuster Education Is Video Shoot Focus By Laurie Langstraat, NCIS The drought of 2012 has been the topic of conversation throughout much of the United States for most of the year. Inadequate moisture and high temperatures wreaked havoc in areas of the country that aren’t accustomed to such things for such long periods of time. Media inquiries as to the severity of the drought and its effect on crop insurance didn’t just come from those in the agricultural media. Reporters from the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, National Journal, CNN, and others called NCIS asking for information and interviews. Farmers across the Midwest appeared in television news stories and newspaper articles. Almost daily, a new article or report appeared showing corn fields shriveling and farmers worried. All of this attention gave the crop insurance industry the perfect opportunity to share its messages with the general public. “Crop insurance is working as Congress designed it to work,” Tom Zacharias, president of NCIS, told every reporter he talked to. “The industry is equipped and ready to handle events such as these,” Gary Smith (white hat) describes what adjusters look for when assessing crop damage.
