Vital Times 2014 - (Page 4)

The President's Page By Paul B. Yost, MD, FAAP F irst, I would like to welcome you to the CSA's new annual publication, Vital Times. At the CSA, we are continually evaluating how we communicate with our most valuable asset: you, our members. We look for ways to be more efficient and cost-effective in our mission to provide you with timely, relevant information about our specialty. Our quarterly Bulletin, though the quality of its content was first rate, was expensive to produce and required a great deal of staff and volunteer physician time. The quarterly Bulletin realistically could not serve as a way to communicate news to CSA members. It took several months to produce one issue of the Bulletin and bring it to print. In that time, whatever the current topic of the day, it was likely to be communicated much sooner by our "CSA Online First" blog, or by member email. We feel that an annual report to our members - covering significant events of the last year, coming trends in the specialty, and how the CSA intends to meet that future - is a better way to provide a permanent archive and at the same time to explore some issues more thoroughly. I am very excited about it! 2014 was a very busy year for your elected leadership. In addition to the usual work of the society - providing advocacy, practice affairs 4 | CSA Vital Times information, communication and world-class education - two issues rose above the usual workload: Proposition 46, and the unexpected resignation of our CSA Executive Director. Proposition 46 was resoundingly defeated by the voters of California because of the efforts and financial support of physicians across the state. I want to thank each CSA member who gave money, time, and voices to this campaign! We did something special with this election: we put together a coalition in opposition to the measure that hadn't been seen in a very long time and may not be seen again until doctors are impugned and challenged once more. We united Democrats, Republicans, Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, organized labor, and the Chamber of Commerce! Now that is a rainbow coalition. The benefits of this victory extend well beyond the November 4 election day. Physicians have earned a new level of respect in Sacramento. Legislators, staffers and people in the know look at doctors in a different light since the election.
