Educational Meetings

Budget 2020

An ad-hoc committee was formed with members of the
Education Committee and the Finance Committee to
solve the financial difficulties that we experienced with
our past meetings. Several new recommendations from
the committee will be implemented with the upcoming
educational meetings. These recommendations are:
nominal increase in registration fees, giving an expense
budget to the meeting chairs, developing content
unique to in-person meeting (problem based learning/
audience participation/networking), and aggressive
negotiation with hotel contracts by AMG. We have
experienced improved attendance at the most recent
Hawaii meeting. We are expecting the exciting new
summer meeting in Oahu to generate additional
revenue for the CSA.

On November 9, 2019, CSA held its second House of
Delegate meeting online in order to approve the 2020
budget. In 2020, the CSA is expecting a revenue of $3.1
million with an expense of $2.8 million, which would
result in a surplus of $320,000.

Unique District Meeting Collaboration
In Orange County this year, we had a unique
collaboration between a private practice group and an
academic anesthesia department in creating a wellattended and educational district meeting. Robert
Kopel, MD, FACP, FASA, from the Newport Harbor
Anesthesia Consultants of Newport Beach (NHAC)
suggested having a journal club type presentation along
with the district meeting. Anesthesia residents from
University of California, Irvine (UCI) presented the
journal articles. Stephen Skahen, MD, from NHAC of
Newport Beach provided the location for the meeting.
Financial support was provided by both NHAC and
CSA. All attendees were able to interact and exchange
clinical ideas without financial influence from the
pharmaceutical industry. In addition, anesthesia
residents from UCI were able to interact with the CSA
members from several large private practice groups.
This district meeting has created a win-win solution for
the CSA and resident members. Financially, it was also
a win for CSA, as the financial support was nominal.
This may be something other districts want to consider
in the future.

GASPAC
Thanks to some changes in billing and collection for
GASPAC, it is on track to reach the $1 million mark in
less than two years! Thank you to all the members who
have been contributing to the GASPAC.

Looking Forward
A new summer educational meeting in Oahu will be
bringing in additional revenue. We will continue to
focus on growing our membership by encouraging
member participation and advocacy in Sacramento.
Website redesign will be another focus of 2020, with
the goal of providing easy access to practical anesthesia
related information, improved navigation, and
increased content. I am confident that the CSA
will continue to perform well financially in 2020.
