Chair farewell dinner After explaining what CHARIOT was and how it has been used at Stanford, around the US, and internationally in Ethiopia, we explained our vision for partnering with the department in Hué. We spent the first few days educating staff on how to use the VR headsets and how to utilize them in practice while maintaining patient safety and comfort as priority number one. We did not want CHARIOT to compromise the delivery of safe anesthesia. After only a few days, the staff was very comfortable with the headsets and was able to utilize them without our supervision. Frightened children were now taken back to the OR comfortably while either actively playing games or passively enjoying programing. We often saw smiles and laughs, which contagiously spread to family members and OR staff. We also used CHARIOT on adults most notably for neuraxial nerve blocks and peripheral nerve blocks, and even during procedures such as Cesarean sections. Many surgeons and staff were intrigued by the VR headsets, wondering why we were using them. Of course they then wanted to try it for themselves! Annual Publication 2019 | 69
