Visiting Scholars in
Pediatric Anesthesia
Program

The Roots of ViSiPAP
The pediatric anesthesia division in the UCSF
Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care
moved to the Mission Bay Campus in 2015 when the
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital opened. While the
pediatric anesthesia faculty loved the new hospital,
they quickly realized they were academically isolated
because they were geographically separated from
the rest of the department and the medical school.
I decided we needed to establish our own pediatric
anesthesia academic community at Mission Bay and
this led to the idea and creation of the Visiting Scholars
in Pediatric Anesthesia Program (ViSiPAP).
We also wanted to find creative ways to support junior
faculty and provide them with experiences that could
help advance their careers in academic medicine.
Pediatric anesthesiologists who are interested
in medical education, patient safety, and quality
improvement often find it more difficult to achieve
academic promotions than their colleagues involved
in basic science research. I brought this concern to
Department Chair Michael Gropper, MD, PhD, and
we decided that one potential solution would be to

establish visiting scholar opportunities for the pediatric
anesthesia faculty.
With that in mind, I worked with Niroop Ravula, MD,
of UC Davis Health to set up the first ViSiPAP faculty
exchange between UCSF and UC Davis. UCSF then
established ViSiPAP faculty exchanges with all of the
pediatric anesthesia divisions on the west coast with
pediatric anesthesia fellowships: Stanford, UCLA,
Loma Linda, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles,
Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU),
Seattle Children's, Children's Hospital Colorado and the
University of New Mexico. Visiting professors spend
a day meeting with faculty and fellows at the hosting
institution and give a presentation at either a fellow's
conference or Grand Rounds. ViSiPAP was initially
supported by a grant from the UCSF Chancellor's Fund
for Faculty Enrichment, and its ongoing support comes
from each participating anesthesia department.
The initial aims of ViSiPAP were to:
