among our membership, the HOD voted to approve
the ASA House of Delegates Comment on Dobbs
SCOTUS Decision, which was essentially the same
as the version passed by the Board of Directors
in August. The comment was a compromise of
positions that ranged from no comment at all, to a
much stronger comment. Many California members
testified on these issues with courage, passion,
integrity, and empathy. California was heard and
very well represented. Thank you to all who were a
part of this ongoing discussion.
* The research presented at the annual meeting was
outstanding and drew media coverage far and wide
with more than 850 media mentions secured to
date, reaching an audience of over 1.7 billion. And
there is even more coverage pending!
* CSA hosted an all-member reception which was
very well attended!

* At the annual meeting there was a lot of discussion
about the No Surprises Act and its effect on
anesthesia practices. Just prior to the Annual
Meeting, on Oct. 19, ASA, ACEP, and ACR filed a
joint amicus brief with the Texas court in support
of the Texas Medical Association's (TMA) second
federal surprise billing lawsuit.
* There were also extensive discussions about the
dismal Medicare payments for anesthesia services
and different plans for relief. On October 31, 2022,
the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)
contributed solutions to several House members
for fixing the broken Medicare physician
payment system and improving the Quality
Payment Program. For anesthesiologists, the
Medicare physician payment system is especially
unsustainable, as current Medicare payment rates
for anesthesia services are less than one-third of
commercial rates. Without Congressional action,
anesthesiologists and their groups may be facing a
combined 10% payment cut to their 2023 Medicare
payments. Congress must add additional resources
to the Medicare payment system to support
reasonable payment

Another notable event for this year was California
winning the award from the ASA for the best leadership
program by a very large component society for Phillip
Richardson's, MD, MBA, FASA, CSA Leadership
Development program/course.
