Highlights from
California Anesthesiology
Residency Programs
E
very year, the CSA looks forward to highlighting
the events, accomplishments, and new features
of California's 13 accredited anesthesia residency
programs. These programs produce the next generation of
physician anesthesiologists who ensure the safe care of
future generations of patients.
To help residents grow and develop into leaders of the
specialty, CSA invites them to participate as members
of its various committees. Each program nominates
a CA-3 resident to serve as a delegate to the CSA, and
a CA-2 resident to serve as alternate delegate. These
delegates are able to attend the annual CSA governance
meeting, and the CA-3 residents are able to vote on any
CSA resolutions. Additionally, residents represent their
programs at the annual ASA Resident House of Delegates.
Beyond delegates, the CSA Resident Representation
Committee has taken on efforts to increase involvement
of residents in CSA and provide them with experience in
both advocacy and practice management.
Each year the CSA hosts a Resident Advocacy Workshop
day where residents are invited to the State Capitol to
learn about the legislative process and CSA's key political
efforts. Residents from each California program have
the opportunity to learn about the crucial issues facing
physician anesthesiologists, meet with legislators and
key staff members in the Capitol, and connect with
fellow residents from around the state. This level of
participation and engagement gives the residents an
exclusive look at the different ways CSA advocates for
our specialty, the opportunity to connect with fellow
anesthesia professionals, and a chance to expand their
leadership roles.
Additionally, CSA sponsors residents to attend a variety
of opportunities including the ASA Practice Management
Conference, the ASA Legislative Day, the CMA Legislative
Day, and more. The Resident Representation Committee
has also worked to curate resident focused webinars to
provide the chance for residents to connect directly with
anesthesiologists around the state on various issues.

The fourth annual History of Anesthesia in California
Essay contest will take place in 2023 for residents,
fellows, and medical students hosted by the CSA History
of Anesthesia Committee. The winner will have the
opportunity to present at the CSA Annual Meeting
and more.
While you read about the highlights of the residency
programs, you'll see the commitment and dedication
invested by the residents throughout 2022. From
completing clinical training, to presenting at national
meetings, to participating in community outreach, these
residents are well on their way to becoming successful
physician anesthesiologists and leaders of our society.
We are extremely proud and look forward
to seeing them reach their highest potential.
