Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command
(NMRTC) San Diego - located in the heart of Balboa
Park, from which it gets its nickname " Balboa, " continues
in its mission of training Navy physicians. Most of our
graduates provide medical care to Sailors, Marines,
and their families on ships, ashore and on bases all
over the world with many pursuing follow-on fellowship
training. Our residency program features numerous
non-traditional residents from a diverse background
of operational experiences. Many have served as
primary care physicians for two to four years in the
fleet, after their internship year and prior to returning to
anesthesiology residency training. Currently, the program
consists of 18 residents, with six in each class. This year,
we bid farewell to Assistant Program Director (APD)
James Slotto, MD, as he leaves the Navy for private
practice and welcome Drs. Lynn Sterni and Dr. Benjamin
Drew to the program leadership as APDs.
Meet the Residents
The Department of Anesthesiology welcomed six CA-1
residents in July:
* LT Kelly Joyce, DO, served as General Medical Officer,
NMRTC New England, Newport, RI.
* LT Michelle Lu, DO, served as General Medical
Officer, Marine Wing Support Squadron 372 in Camp
Pendleton, CA.
* LCDR Henry " Sandy " Sanders, DO, MPH, served
as Senior Undersea Medical Officer, Naval Diving and
Salvage Training Center, Panama City Beach, FL.
* LT Luke Shope, DO completed his transitional year
internship at NMRTC San Diego, CA.
* LT William Tilbury, MD, served as the Battalion
Surgeon, 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines in Kaneohe Baho,
HI, followed by a tour as the Senior Medical Officer,
USS Somerset (LPD-25) in San Diego, CA

Education and Academics
Residents continue their academic involvement with
opportunities to present at the American Society
of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and Western Regional
Anesthesiology Conference (WARC).
This year we are proud to congratulate Drs. Matthew
Hannon and Jessica Nieto on their commendation by
the American Board of Anesthesiologists for receiving
a score in the top 10th percentile on their Basic Exam.
Locally, the department also had a strong showing at the
NMRTC Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) fair with
seven process improvement projects aimed at improving
patient safety.
We continue a monthly Resident Education Day (RED)
led by a senior resident with a staff faulty member, that
provides a protected opportunity for residents to focus
on academics and continued expansion of the Point
of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum directed by Dr.
Damon Dertina. Included are monthly POCUS lectures
with a new graduation requirement for all residents to be
TTE certified.
