on Professional and Public Communication (CPPC)
with better defined mission areas. This new CPPC
chaired by Emily Methangkool, MD, MPH, and staffed
by Kate Peyser, and in partnership with Alison
MacLeod and Lisa Yarbrough at KP Public Affairs, will
be interfacing will all major committees, divisions,
and task forces as well as the CSA Foundation to
actively promote the great work by CSA members and
advance the recognition, social standing, and influence
of anesthesiologists. Already, CSA's digital media
campaign to increase public awareness of the critical
roles and importance of physician anesthesiologists
has moved into a second phase with new online videos
and educational advertisements. Visit the CSA YouTube
channel (youtube.com/@CSAHQ) to view and share
these incredible videos.
Two new task forces are charged with redesigning the
CSA website and commemorating the 75th anniversary
of CSA, and they are chaired by CSA Past President
Christine Doyle, MD, FASA, and History Committee Chair
Jane Moon, MD, respectively. At the time of this report,
a new website design vendor has been identified, and
we anticipate unveiling the new CSA website in 2023.
Dr. Moon's task force has been hard at work planning
online content and events to highlight CSA and the
accomplishments of California's anesthesiologists for
the past 75 years. I hope you will all join us in person
for our CSA Annual Meeting in San Diego, April 27-30
and Anesthesiology 2023, the ASA annual meeting
which will be held in San Francisco, so we can celebrate
CSA's diamond jubilee anniversary together at a special
CSA All-Member Reception.
These first few months as CSA President have been
quite eventful. In early June 2022, I had the privilege
of participating in the American Medical Association
(AMA) annual meeting as an ASA delegate. In this
role, I was able to cast my vote for Jesse Ehrenfeld,
MD, MPH, and witness the first anesthesiologist
to become President-Elect of the AMA. Later that
month, the United States Supreme Court released its
Me at the AMA HOD in June with now President-Elect of the AMA,
anesthesiologist Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld
decision on the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health
Organization case which overturned the 1973 decision
of Roe vs. Wade. CSA issued a timely and thoughtful
statement to support high quality patient care, defend
the healthcare role and oath-sworn obligations of
physicians, and reassure the public that access to
abortion would not be restricted in California. The
Executive Committee and CPPC then codified a
written policy for issuing public statements on current
issues that are time-sensitive in July 2022, which was
approved by the Executive Committee and the Board of
Directors. To ensure timeliness and relevance, the policy
identifies the following topics that would be eligible
for " immediate " comment when also aligned with the
CSA mission and guiding principles: the practice of
anesthesiology; patient safety; and the relationship
between physicians and their patients.
In July 2022, I welcomed attendees to my first CSA
educational event as President: the 2022 CSA Summer
Anesthesia Conference, chaired by Brendan Carvalho,
MD, FRCA, and held on the island of Oahu. It was
