Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns
Hopkins and the Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of Charlotte R.
Bloomberg Children's Center. Sapna brought her unique
clinical and research skills as she expertly approached the
topics " Optimizing rehabilitation after anesthesia for major
surgery " and " Anesthesia and neurocognitive outcomes
in childhood " . Sapna carefully presented evidence on
neurocognitive outcomes and functional outcomes in
childhood following anesthesia and surgery, and her
talk on " Emergence agitation in children " gave many
clinical pearls in how to manage this common pediatric
anesthesia problem.
Romy Yun, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor in the
Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain
Medicine at Stanford University gave an excellent talk on
" Alleviating Pediatric Preoperative Anxiety: Pharmacology
to Virtual Reality " , that provided us unique insights
into evidence-based strategies to decrease anxiety on
separation from parents and induction of anesthesia in
pediatric patients. The virtual reality techniques proposed
by Romy, went beyond her talk, as we moved the Saturday
program virtually, so attendees could enjoy more sun and
sea while listening to selected recorded talks and still
obtaining additional CME.
Alana Flexman, MD, MBA, FRCPC, Clinical Associate
Professor and Director of Research, Department of
Anesthesiology at St. Paul's Hospital/Providence
Health Care, University of British Columbia was our
overseas keynote speaker. Alana leveraged her skills as
a neuroanesthesiologist to cover important topics that
impact many anesthesiologists: " Frailty and postoperative
outcomes after surgery " , " Current recommendations
and best practices in perioperative brain health " and
" Perioperative stroke after non-cardiac surgery " . Her
superb, well-organized presentations will help attendees
apply key recommendations to improve their patient's
perioperative brain health and treat perioperative stroke.
Alana Flexman and Elizabeth Ozery, MD, our obstetric
anesthesiology trainee from Department of Anesthesiology,
Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University
both addressed DEI, a core theme of our meeting, with
fascinating talks on " Equity, diversity and inclusion in
Anesthesiology " and " Awake and afraid: how to address
disparities for patients of limited English proficiency " .
Attendees took home definitive approaches to improve
diversity and inclusion, and improve care for patients with
limited English proficiency at their institutions.
BobbieJean Sweitzer, MD, FACP, SAMBA-F, FASA,
Professor, Medical Education, University of Virginia and
Systems Director, Preoperative Practices, Inova Health
gave incredible talks that covered a wide range of key
perioperative topics. Her talks on " Preparing patients for
anesthesia and surgery " , " 10 Essential questions to ask
every ambulatory surgical patient " and " Perioperative
anemia evaluation and management " imparted
valuable information on perioperative planning and
care to optimize surgical outcomes. The importance of
preoperative anemia and best practices to treat anemia
preoperatively was a highlight. BobbieJean also covered
key management strategies to reduce perioperative
cardiac risk in her talk " Ischemic heart disease isn't
the worst cardiac disease and the fallacy of coronary
revascularization " and outlined best practices in managing
newly discovered atrial fibrillation during her talk on " Atrial
fibrillation: Background, anticoagulation management and
what do you do when AF is discovered day of surgery " .
We could not let the President of CSA, Edward R.
Mariano, MD, MAS, FASA, Professor of Anesthesiology,
Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University,
enjoy too much sun and sea, and he obliged with four
excellent talks. Ed gave us insights into " Lessons learned
from the U.S. opioid epidemic: national strategy and
local tactics " and the value of opioid-free and multimodal
analgesic strategies. He leveraged his regional anesthesia
skills to educate us on " The role of new fascial plane
blocks in regional anesthesia practice " and outline the
evidence for local anesthetic formulations and adjuncts to
" Personalizing pain medicine: making nerve blocks last as
long as patients need them " .
Lastly I, Brendan Carvalho MBBCh, FRCA, MDCH,
FASA, Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain
Medicine at Stanford University, also had to do some work
beyond chairing the meeting! I was delighted to cover
key topics relevant to obstetric anesthesia care providers
including: " Labor Analgesia: Strategies to optimize
analgesia and enhance obstetric and fetal outcomes " ,
" Enhanced Recovery and Analgesia after Cesarean
Delivery: Evidence-based recommendations " , " UltrasoundAnnual
