president ' s message
A CLEAR MESSAGE AND A CLEAR PLAN
By Dr. Frank Beglin, PCSO President, 2014 - 2015
I
Dr. Beglin
Dr. Beglin
am honored and humbled - and a little out of
my comfort zone - to be writing my first President's column for the PCSO Bulletin. Like most
of you, I spend my days talking to patients,
determining treatment plans, and organizing
staff for efficiency. As a director and board officer, I
participate in many team conversations and strategy
discussions. Writing an article is new to me, but communicating with members is an important element of
leading the PCSO. Luckily, talking about the benefits
of PCSO membership and how fortunate I feel to be a
leader in this society comes easily for me, so putting
it in print is just the next step in the evolution of
something I've been doing for a long time.
INVOLVEMENT = ENRICHMENT
My involvement in PCSO governance began in 1999,
when I was part of the New and Younger Member
Committee; in 2001, I became the chair of that
committee. I continued as a director, a delegate, and
an officer. I am a past president of the Nevada State
Orthodontic Society. I have been active in local dental
societies in California (where I used to practice)
and Nevada (where I currently practice), working
on state legislation and other issues important to
our profession and specialty. I've attended national
legislative meetings, met with targeted task forces
to determine how to best meet the changing needs
of orthodontists in a changing environment, and
chaired committees on everything from budgets to
marketing. This involvement in organized dentistry has
dramatically enriched my life, both professionally
2
and personally. I feel confident that my fellow board and
committee members would say the same - but each of
our paths to involvement has been different. My first
presidential message to the PCSO membership is to
get involved. Find a way to work for issues of which you
have knowledge and for which you have passion.
LEADING = ENHANCING
I am really looking forward to my year as president and
I know it will be made infinitely easier by the work of
the many PCSO presidents who have served before me.
Each one contributed to the success and structure of
our society. To list them all here would take more space
than even the president is allowed! However, I would
like to mention a few who have served as mentors and
role models for me: Dr. Robert Varner, current AAO
President; Dr. Norman Nagel, current AAO Trustee;
and Dr. Gary Baughman, current AAO Speaker of
the House. PCSO is certainly well represented at the
national level this year. Over the past few years, PCSO
has had visionary presidents who drew the map, built
the road, engineered the car, and have now put me in
the sweet position of simply having to stay the course:
Drs. Ronald Jawor, Bryan Williams, Rob Merrill, Lesley
Williams, Lili Horton, and Ron Wolk, and many more
who served in this role in the past several years. These
past presidents hail from various states and provinces,
and each brought a unique perspective when they
served, but all of them have one thing in common; they
improved an already strong society in a lasting way. My
second presidential message to you: my goal this year is
to enhance member benefits, the scope of programming,
and the efficient operation of PCSO in a lasting way.
