Orthodontic Program is preparing to graduate five
residents this winter. In the spring, second-year
residents completed the written portion of the
American Board of Orthodontics examination and
attended the Tweed Course in Tucson, Arizona.
This fall and winter, the program will once again
review applications and interview candidates for
the next generation of orthodontists.

The British Columbia Society of
Orthodontists' (BCSO) AGM was
held virtually on September 20.
We had a lecture by one of our
own members, Dr. Benjamin Pliska, followed by
our business meeting. During this important
meeting of the members, we voted on a new set
of bylaws and policy and procedures manual.
The leadership development sessions provided
by the PCSO this past spring helped us formulate
new governance documents. We also would like
to thank Dr. Amanda Maplethorpe (past BCSO,
Canadian Association of Orthodontists [CAO], and
World Federation of Orthodontists president and
bylaws-writer extraordinaire) for her assistance
and guidance through this project. As approved,
these edits change our executive structure for
(hopefully) the final time!
This is also the first year that membership dues
will be collected on our behalf by the CAO. For
members not interested in being members of the
CAO, they can still be members of the BCSO by
just paying dues directly to our association; we
hope this will help mitigate some of the work of
the treasurer.
In other COVID-related news, at the time of writing,
British Columbia has a one dose vaccination
rate of 76% and a 70% rate for fully vaccinated.
Travel has opened slightly with the quarantine
requirements upon return being dropped for fully
vaccinated individuals. Masks are still required in
indoor settings and in all schools for grades 4 and
up. Schools went into session on September 7,
and vaccination passports will begin on September
13 for nonessential activities.

We continue to focus on advocating
for consumer health and
safety, and we have renewed our
efforts to involve members in providing
data from patients being retreated due to
an adverse do-it-yourself treatment outcome. Our
goal is to ensure that legislators and stakeholders
have a clearer understanding of the number of
patients harmed when diagnosis and treatment
oversight are not adequate. We retained lobbyists
earlier this year who are assisting us in our efforts
to educate policy makers, and we are always
looking for members who are interested in being
active in this process.
The tradition of recognizing graduates from
orthodontic programs around the state continued
this summer. It has been well received
by both residents and California Association of
Orthodontists members! You can check out the

Planning continues for our upcoming half-day
educational seminar: The Art & Science of Orthodontics-Laser
Gingival Contouring presented
by Dr. Stuart Frost. It is being held in conjunction
with the fall board meeting and annual leader
appreciation dinner, where we will present
annual awards and install new officers and a new
member on the board of directors. We are very
pleased to be honoring Dr. Bob Meister with the
Distinguished Service Award and Assemblyman
Evan Low with the Award of Merit.
