technique, the Tip-Edge appliance, and treatment
with clear aligners and TADs. After graduation,
Dr. Zhang took the American Board of Orthodontics
Clinical Examination with his classmate, Dr.
Monica Verez, who now practices in Apple Valley,
California. In 2010, Dr. Zhang became a Diplomate
of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Zhang was deeply touched by the dedication
and generosity of his instructors at CWRU, who
voluntarily shared their many years of teaching
experience, and was inspired to follow in their
footsteps so that he could contribute to this
amazing specialty. Three faculty members in
particular greatly influenced Dr. Zhang's professional
career: Drs. Hans and Wolf, who acted
as Dr. Zhang's thesis mentors as well as clinical
instructors, and Dr. Johnston, who taught cephalometrics,
facial growth, and orthodontic history.
These faculty members supported Dr. Zhang in
many ways. Dr. Hans emphasized improving residents'
critical thinking and is a great mentor and
lifelong friend of Dr. Zhang. Dr. Wolf, a former
orthodontic resident of Dr. Vince Kokich, Sr., at
the University of Washington, was an outstanding
clinician and a great educator; he taught
clinical photography and was the director of early
treatment in the Department of Orthodontics at
CWRU for more than 30 years. Both Drs. Hans and
Wolf are so supportive of their students during
and after residency. For example, a few years
after graduation, Dr. Wolf kindly offered to be one
of the sponsors for Dr. Zhang's Angle Midwest
Society associate membership. Dr. Zhang is also
grateful to Dr. Johnston for the education he
received and for the continuing professional support
and encouragement after graduation.
During Dr. Zhang's residency at CWRU, he was
appointed as co-director of the International
Fellowship and, with Dr. Hans, supervised two
international fellows. Dr. Zhang was also instrumental
in creating a collaboration between the
orthodontic departments at PKU and CWRU. As
a result, these two departments can exchange
residents during the summer (Figure 2).

After Dr. Zhang finished his orthodontic residency
at CWRU, he decided to remain in the United
States with his family and continue his professional
career. Following advice from Drs. Hans
and Amberman, he accepted a faculty position
at the Jacksonville University School of Orthodontics,
which has one of the largest orthodontic
residency programs in the United States. During
his more than six years of teaching at Jacksonville
University, Dr. Zhang felt fortunate to work with
two senior orthodontists and educators, Drs.
John Joseph " Jack " Sheridan and John Rumble. He
also developed a great friendship with a younger
orthodontist and Saint Louis University orthodontic
graduate, Dr. Christina Araujo (Figure 3).
Dr. Zhang loved working with the large group of
residents at Jacksonville University and enjoyed
the beach life of the Jacksonville community.
During his last two years at Jacksonville University,
he was delighted to have the opportunity
to work with two of his former instructors, Dr.
James Trouten, the current department chair and
program director, and Dr. Richard Griffith.
Before Dr. Zhang joined ASDOH-POP, he was
a clinical associate professor at the University
of Florida (UF) Department of Orthodontics.
During his time with this prestigious program,
