cialties. I chose to specialize in orthodontics, as
it seemed so permanently impactful on people's
lives. I decided to apply to several orthodontic
programs.
JP: Which orthodontic program did you attend?
PW: I was fortunate to be accepted to USC's
graduate orthodontic program. USC's program was
directed by Harry Dougherty, a true renaissance
man. The USC program was very clinically based.
My orthodontic mentors included Dougherty, Terry
Root, Eldor Sagehorn, and other strong clinicians.
Dougherty always inherited complex cases! People
would ask him what system he used. He would say,
" I use my brain, " and this always stuck with me. He
tackled the treatment of craniofacial kids with challenging
problems; this had a significant influence
on me. Cecil Steiner taught us cephalometrics. The
program was geared to goal-driven orthodontics:
know where you are, know where you want to
go, and formulate mechanics to get there. Orthodontic
treatment was with edgewise appliances,
equally split between 0.018-in and 0.022-in slots.
My orthodontic classmates were Parviz Alai, Harry
Aronowitz, Bill Green, David Marshak, Chu Lee,
Bruce Settle, Harry White, John Whitaker, and Farnaz
Zand-Karimi. This was a great and diversified
group (learning while having fun).
JP: How did you choose your practice location?
PW: After completing my orthodontic residency,
Linda and I decided to move to the Sacramento

area, where her brother lived. It was far less congested
and was midway between the Bay Area
and the Sierras. It turned out to be a wise choice.
JP: Do you have an emphasis or interest in some
aspect of clinical practice?
PW: My practice seems to accumulate unusual
cases. These include TMD, craniofacial patients,
difficult impaction cases, surgical cases, multidisciplinary
restorative cases, and so on, which I
enjoy treating.
JP: Do you have any specific protocols?
PW: As far as special clinical protocols, taking
excellent beginning records is critical. These
include articulated study models and cone-beam
computed tomography (CBCT) imaging with a
report from an oral radiologist.
