Dr. Anthony Ellenikiotis, January 21,
1959-July 11, 2021
The Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO)
has lost an exemplary clinician and a dedicated
orthodontic educator. Dr. Anthony (Tony) J. Ellenikiotis
was a very proud father of four wonderful
children, a prominent orthodontist in the Bay
Area for more than 34 years, and a full clinical
professor and chairman of admissions at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in
the Division of Orthodontics for 25 years.
Tony attended the University of California, Santa
Barbara, for his undergraduate degree, earned his
DDS at the University of the Pacific, and completed
his MS and certificate in orthodontics at
Georgetown University. Soon after, he opened his
orthodontic practice in 1987 in Saratoga, California,
and opened a second office in Willow Glen,
California, in 2005. Known by his patients and
UCSF residents as Dr. E., he was greatly respected
for his clinical excellence and caring teaching
style. Tony was fully committed to teaching, mentoring,
and all aspects of orthodontic education.
He taught for many years at the Roth-Williams
Center for Functional Occlusion before joining the
teaching faculty at UCSF, where he taught and
mentored more than 125 orthodontic residents
during his academic tenure and was the recipient
of several
teaching
awards over
the years. Many
of his residents
held associate
positions in
his practice to
further develop
their clinical
and practice
management
skills and learn
from him.
As chairman of admissions in the UCSF Division of
Orthodontics, he was passionate about attracting
the very best residents from across the country.
Tony's biggest investment was the generations
of orthodontic residents he taught and helped
to become better clinicians. He cared so much
about who filled our resident spots every year and
worked tirelessly to ensure that we would have
the " cream of the crop " group in each incoming
class. Tony's dedication to teaching and the
orthodontic profession was further substantiated
by his establishment of the Anthony J. Ellenikiotis
Endowment in the Division of Orthodontics at
UCSF. He was recognized by the university for
his generous contribution and for being the first
to establish such an endowment to financially
support future orthodontic residents.
In addition, he was an artist in his practice and
at home, where he showcased his paintings
and decorative arrangements. He also created
magnificent and beautiful gardens, including a
fruit orchard, olive orchard, vegetable garden, and
a vast array of colorful flowers and plants that
provided a retreat for his family and friends.
With all of these accomplishments and achievements,
his greatest passion, focus, and love was
for his four children, Eleni, Soula, Yianni, and
George, as well as his " other four children, " their
spouses, David, Rocky, Victoria, and Kelsie. He was
devoted to family above all else and was adored
and loved by his children who regarded him as
the world's greatest dad.
After a heroic 18-month battle with pancreatic
cancer, his legacy will continue to live on. He
loved fiercely and without condition, and he was
loved, and will be loved, in the same way by all
who were fortunate enough to know him.
As my teaching partner for more than two
decades, covering the Tuesday afternoon clinic at
UCSF, Tony's passing has left a huge void in my
life and in the lives of our other UCSF colleagues,
one that won't be filled for years to come. I
consider myself very fortunate to have shared so
many unforgettable memories with this incomparable
friend. Rest in peace, my brother.
