Executive Update

PCSO Executive Director
I hope that this message finds you all safe,
healthy, and happy. I feel as if I am on a rinse-andrepeat
cycle from this time last year. We are again
seeing devastating wildfires in the west and,
just as we thought the light at the end of this
pandemic tunnel was getting brighter, we are
faced with more tragedy as a result of the Delta
variant of COVID-19. I still remain optimistic that
we will overcome and rise stronger out of all of
this. For the sake of togetherness and our health
and well-being, I just hope that happens sooner
rather than later.
Helen Keller once said, " A bend in the road is not
the end of the road . . . unless you fail to make the
turn. " We have all been forced to veer widely, but
the road continues, as has the work of the Pacific
Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO) and its
leaders who are working hard for all of you.
Activity Highlight
Here is a snippet of what the PCSO committees
and task forces have been working on.
▫ Volunteerism: We want to hear from more of
our members and get more people like you
involved with the PCSO! Learn more about the
opportunities available here: https://www.
pcsortho.org/leadership-opportunities/, and
make sure you have completed the volunteer
survey.
▫ Membership and Communications: The committee
is reviewing proposals from companies
to conduct a member needs analysis and
focus groups in 2022. They also are looking
at member renewals for this year. The dues
deadline was changed beginning in 2021; they
must now be paid in full by November 15 to
avoid cancellation.
▫ Continuing Education (CE): The members of
this committee continued to provide input
and assistance to the planning committee
for the Western Orthodontic Conference
(WOCON) this October, even as it led to the
eventual cancellation of the meeting. Unfortunately,
increased restrictions on events and
gatherings in the city of Portland presented
challenges that were too insurmountable.
Despite our efforts to plan a safe, in-person
gathering for members, we were forced to
cancel the 2021 WOCON Annual Session. The
group worked diligently to be able to offer a
virtual version of the workshop scheduled for
the 2021 WOCON by The Ritz-Carlton Leadership
Center on October 22. Additional sessions
may be available as recordings for review in
the coming months.
The CE Committee is well underway in planning
the 2022 WOCON Spring Session for March 4-5
in Las Vegas, featuring The Ritz-Carlton Leadership
Center. You won't want to miss this event!
Space will be limited. Also in the works is the
2022 WOCON Annual Session, October 27-30, in
San Diego. Lastly, the Virtual Learning/Webinars
Subcommittee has identified a platform to host
our recordings and future webinars and is looking
to identify a variety of topics for online learning.
▫ Corporate Practice Issues: The task force is
looking at potential topics to recommend to
the CE Committee for consideration in future
WOCON or virtual learning opportunities as
the needs for corporate members differ at
times from those in private practice. They are
also looking at ways to highlight corporate orthodontists
in different stages of their careers
and the possibility of a job fair, of some sort,
at a future meeting.
▫ PCSO Women Orthodontists: The committee
had planned to host its first women's
breakfast at the 2021 WOCON Annual Session,
which had to be canceled, and continues to
highlight women members to be featured
on the PCSO social media channels and the
monthly NewsWire.
▫ Non-Dues Revenue: This group continues
to look at additional offerings that might be
options for PCSO to add to its revenue sources.
One of these options is already launched and is
a PCSO career center (https://careers.pcsortho.
org/), allowing for doctor and team job
searches that can be filtered by state/province,
