PCSO 2021 AAO and AAOF Honorees
AAO James E. Brophy Distinguished
Service Award
I sincerely appreciate the honor of receiving the
James E. Brophy Distinguished Service Award. My
association adventures began when Dr. Donald
Poulton encouraged my appointment to become
editor of the PCSO Bulletin. That appointment led
to more than 20 years of involvement with the
PCSO Board of Directors, the American Association
of Orthodontists (AAO) House of Delegates,
and the American Journal of Orthodontics and
Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) editorial board.
I served as the AJO-DO clinical editor for many
years. My Berkeley practice partner, Michael
Meyer, and I started the French-language edition
of the AJO-DO.

AAO Harry Sicher Research Award
The Harry Sicher Research Award was established
by the AAO in 1976. The Harry Sicher Research
Award recognizes an original investigation of
significance and value to the art and science of
orthodontics. Dr. Timothée Cousin is honored to
be the recipient of the 2021 Harry Sicher Research
Award.

Dr. Cousin was born and raised in Paris, France,
where he resided until his family emigrated to
Colorado in 2000. He went on to study psychology
as an undergraduate at the University of
Washington. Dr. Cousin's interest in research
began as an undergraduate student when he
spent six months in Zurich, Switzerland, working
on epigenetic research, and more specifically
histone acetylation and methylation as it relates
to rheumatoid arthritis. This experience provided
him with a strong background in the research
process.
Upon entering the University of Washington
School of Dentistry, Dr. Cousin was committed to
expanding his research experience. He continued
exploring basic science research by enrolling in
a research-focused track that led him to work on
enamel remineralization research and present at
various national symposiums under the leadership
of Dr. Sami Dogan. He also worked under the
mentorship of Dr. Sid Vora and Dr. Rooz Khosravi
on exploring the timing of spheno-occipital
synchondrosis ossification using cone-beam
computed tomography imaging for patients with
Class III malocclusions.
Dr. Cousin's research interest did not flourish
until his enrollment in the residency program
offered by the University of Washington Department
of Orthodontics. Spurred by an interest
in public health orthodontics, Dr. Cousin began
exploring how Medicaid patients gain access to
Medicaid-funded orthodontic care. He was honored
and fortunate to work with Dr. Burcu Bayirli,
Dr. Geoff Greenlee, and Dr. Gerald Nelson, whose
long-standing interests and experiences in public
health orthodontic research provided him with
valuable insights on his current project.
After completing his orthodontic training, Dr.
Cousin was honored to join his long-time menI
have participated in University of California San
Francisco academics for many years. As anyone
who teaches knows, the experience is an honor
and an inspiration. With my Korean colleagues, I
have coauthored more than 100 journal articles.
These experiences have connected me with great
female and male educators and clinicians who
have enabled me to contribute to our specialty.
I wish I could take time to thank all of those who
have mentored and supported me. However, I
must thank for their love and support my family:
