PCSO 2021 AAO and AAOF Honorees
Research via an R01 grant. This is a longitudinal
study to measure jaw mechanics and behaviors
in growing children to understand better
why functional appliance therapies are more
successful in some cases than in others. This
project is the result of two decades of research
with multiple collaborators, including Dr. Nickel;
Dr. Yoly Gonzalez-Stucker, an expert in orofacial
pain and temporomandibular disorders at the
University at Buffalo; Dr. Ying Liu, a statistician
at East Tennessee State University; Dr. Luigi
Gallo, a bioengineer and recently retired from
the University of Zurich, Switzerland; and Dr. Hai
Yao, a bioengineer at Clemson University and
Medical University of South Carolina. Other participants
in the current study based at OHSU are
Drs. Sohyon " Michelle " Kim and Hongzeng Liu.
This current study would not have been possible
without previous support from the AAOF and the
National Institutes of Health. Dr. Iwasaki is especially
grateful to all AAOF donors. Their donations
are the lifeblood of orthodontic education and
research-essential direct support of orthodontic
educators and residents. Through 10 years of
service on the AAOF Planning and Awards Review
Committee, Dr. Iwasaki witnessed firsthand how
the AAOF is fulfilling its missions and working to
serve the orthodontic specialty.
Now that she has returned to the west, Dr. Iwasaki
is excited to be a part of the PCSO and is looking
forward to continuing to learn with and from
future orthodontists and dentists, colleagues, and
collaborators.
