An Interview with Dr. John Jones
Dr. Kathryn Preston (KP): Dr. Jones, please tell me
something about your childhood. Where were
you born? Where did you grow up?

Dr. John Jones (JJ): I was born in Douglas, Arizona.
My ancestors pioneered in the Arizona Territory
beginning in the 1870s. My dad was born in west
Texas, and then he and his family moved to Arizona
in the 1920s. I grew up in Glendale, Arizona, which
is a little farm community about 10 miles east of
Phoenix. School, work, and sports took up most
of our time. Hunting, fishing, and sports were the
highlights of my youth. As I look back on that period
of my life from my present perspective, I was probably
living in the best of times without realizing it.
KP: Are there any other dentists in your family?
JJ: I was the first person in my family to have
the privilege of a college education. There were

no other dentists in my generation or before.
However, I have one son and a son-in-law who
are dentists and one son and son-in-law who are
orthodontists.
KP: Tell me about your family. How did you meet
your spouse?
JJ: I went to Arizona State University (ASU) on a
baseball scholarship, and I met my wife, Loretta,
there. She was a music major.
KP: Any children?
JJ: Loretta and I have six children. John, the oldest,
is a pediatric anesthesiologist. Matt is an orthodontist,
Paul is a dentist, Julie is a dental hygienist
and is married to an orthodontist, Jenny is in real
estate and is married to a dentist, and Mike has
fast food restaurants. We also had a foster child,
Dr. Jones in the 1960s playing for his university baseball team as center field position (middle)
