Dr. Rodney Matthews, Dr. Don Poulton, Dr.
Egil Harvold-to name a few. I was probably
most influenced by Dr. West, who was a really
good person and a great role model, and Dr.
Matthews, who pushed everyone toward
excellence. He was a major factor in teaching
anatomy and growth and development and understanding
the aging factor. Dr. Poulton and
Dr. Harvold instructed me in some craniofacial
and complex cases and taught us the basics in
these cases.
KP: Did you do research?
JJ: I did research, mentored by Dr. Matthews, that
was published in the Angle Orthodontist. The
topic was on growth and development and tooth
eruption.
KP: Were you involved in the US Military?
JJ: After graduating college, I was in the US Army
from 1965 until 1969. I was stationed in Alaska,
which was a staging area. Units were trained
there, and their families were allowed to accompany
them. Then, they would be sent to Vietnam.
My role was to take care of any family members
who came with orthodontics appliances.
KP: Are you involved in other healthcare associations?
JJ:
I was on the craniofacial-cleft palate team
at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix for 33 years.
I treated hundreds of children with clefts and
craniofacial anomalies as part of that team.
KP: Did you take the ABO examination?
JJ: I passed the ABO in 1976.
KP: Are you an Angle Society member?
JJ: I have been a member of the Southwest
Component of the Angle Society since 1976. I was
president from 1987-1989.
KP: Other dental groups?
JJ: I am also a member of the American Dental
Association, AAO, Arizona Dental Association,
PCSO, College of Diplomates of the ABO, and the
Arizona Orthodontic Study Group. I was PCSO
program chairman in the early 1990s where I
met Dr. Pat Turley. The study group had a major
impact on my development as an orthodontist.
We presented cases at our monthly meetings,
which caused me to strive for excellence in my
practice and also provided a place to get advice
from more experienced orthodontists on my
problem cases.
KP: Have you or your spouse been involved in civic
or volunteer work?
JJ: I coached baseball for 24 years, including one
year at the high school level. I also coached Pop
Warner football for 12 years and was involved in
Boy Scouts for 28 years. I've backpacked from rim
to rim (of the Grand Canyon) four times and rafted
through the Grand Canyon, and I was awarded
the Silver Beaver in scouting. My wife has played
in a community band and worked with the young
women of our church for a number of years.
KP: How did you become involved in teaching
orthodontics?
JJ: I became involved in teaching through Dr.
Pat Turley and Dr. Larry Luke at the University of
California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I started teaching
around 1997. I had never envisioned myself teaching
until they mentioned the possibility. My dad
had always told me to never shy away from doing
hard things-work hard and stay positive; it will
only make you stronger. I've always tried to follow
that advice. So I decided to make time to do it. I'm
truly grateful to Dr. Turley and Dr. Luke for taking
a chance on me and for the opportunity to teach
at UCLA.
KP: In your early years as a faculty member, were
there any mentors who helped you get going?
