JJ: I feel we are all very privileged to be in such a
beautiful profession and have the opportunity
to have a positive impact on the people we have
the privilege of treating. That trust demands that
we as individuals and as a profession owe it to
our patients to be uncompromising in the honest
pursuit of beauty, function, and long-term stability.
We should look at each patient as though they
are loved members of our family.
KP: Do you have any advice for other orthodontists
who may be considering teaching?
JJ: Learn to really care about people. Discipline
yourself to become an excellent clinician and
then go for it!
KP: What advice do you have for orthodontists
who are new to managing a clinic, from your perspective
as a clinic director of your own practice
and of a residency clinic?
JJ: In my experience, the referral base you build
is by caring about the people you're treating.
The bulk of my patients came from patient
referrals and not a marketing program. A commitment
to clinical excellence was helped by my
study club and the Angle Society. I learned to
manage staff through experience, and eventually
I hired a management firm to teach me how
to manage.
KP: Is there anything you wish you had done, or
done differently, now that you reflect on your
career?
JJ: I wish, in a way, that I were young and could
do it all again. I love the patients, the students,
and everything about orthodontics. I don't think
I would do too much differently, but if I started
now, I would use more technology, still observe
the same principles of treatment excellence, and
have fun. For me, it was fun to go to work!
