Dr. Patrick Turley (PT): Tell me something about
your childhood.
Dr. Patrick Turley

Dr. Thomas Merrill (TM): I was born in Seattle,
Washington, as the youngest of the five children
of Monte and Eunice Merrill. I think there is a
genetic defect in my family that creates orthodontists.
My father is an orthodontist, as is my
brother and two brother-in-laws. My nephew is
the black sheep in the family, as he is a general
dentist!
PT: How did you choose dentistry and orthodontics?

TM: When I was young, I wanted to either be a
professional baseball player or an orthodontist.
We all see how that panned out! After attending
Brigham Young University (BYU) for undergraduate
school, I attended the University of Washington
for dental school. My education there was
amazing, and I'm grateful for the preparation
it gave me for clinical practice. I completed my
orthodontic residency at the University of Minnesota.
As you see, I moved down the food chain as
my education proceeded. From Cougar to Husky
to Golden Gopher. The University of Minnesota
was a strong clinical program with great research
opportunities. I'm equally grateful for the excellent
training I received there and for the time,
talents, and expertise of both the full-time and
part-time faculty. I won't name them, but the faculty
and my coresidents helped me grow in skill
and knowledge. For research, I worked with 3M
and the University of Minnesota on enamel loss
on teeth with white spot lesions during adhesive
removal.
PT: How did you choose your practice location?
TM: I joined my brother Rob Merrill in private
practice in 2001 in Wenatchee, Washington. I
worried about mixing family and business, but
for ten years I had the best partner anyone could
