Happy Birthday
As we celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the
PCSO Bulletin, I am honored to become the 12th
editor-in-chief (EIC) of this prestigious publication.
The Bulletin was first published in 1922 with
Carl O. Engstrom as its first editor. There would
be seven EICs over the first half century, including
Reuben Blake, William Elsasser, William Smith, C.
F. Stenson Dillon, William S. Parker, and Wayne
Watson.

Wayne Watson was our seventh EIC of the Bulletin,
serving from 1973-1978. He followed that
position by becoming the EIC of the American
Journal of Orthodontics (1978-1985). Wayne has
been retired from orthodontic practice for many
years but still regularly attends PCSO, American
Association of Orthodontists, and Angle Society
meetings with camera in hand. He is a prolific
photographer and has recently published his seventh
book featuring his photographs, the most
recent one on his travels to Egypt. At 90 years
young, Wayne shows no sign of slowing down.
I've had the privilege of working with our previous
four editors. I first became involved with the Bulletin
in 1987 when Dave Turpin asked me to become
the Southern Section editor. In that capacity,
I was responsible for writing up summaries of
lectures presented at both the Southern Section
and PCSO Annual Sessions. Every four issues, the
Portrait of a Professional column highlighted
the career of a Southern Section member. I was
able to interview such orthodontic luminaries
as Howard Lang, Jack Rathbone, Tom Mulligan,
and Robert Ricketts, to name a few. The Bulletin
won many awards under Dave's leadership. He
followed his tenure with the Bulletin by becoming
EIC of the Angle Orthodontist (1989-1999) and
then the American Journal of Orthodontics and
Dentofacial Orthopedics (2000-2010, 2013-2014). I
spoke with Dave recently, and at the age of 83, he
is finally retired from teaching at the University
of Washington. He and Norman Wahl, another
longtime contributor to the Bulletin, recently
completed a chapter on orthodontic history to be
published in the upcoming 7th
edition of OrthoI
was on the PCSO Board of Directors when we
selected Gerald Nelson to become EIC in 1991.
After finishing the orthodontic Curriculum II program
at the University of California, San Francisco
(UCSF), Jerry entered the U.S. Air Force, serving 2½
years in Greece. As a small orthodontic coincidence,
Jerry returned to the Bay Area, joining
and eventually taking over the practice of Wayne
Watson. Now a faculty member at the UCSF, Jerry
brought his passion for practice management
into the pages of the Bulletin. He recruited his
classmate and partner Earl Johnson to write one
of the most popular columns, Earl's Pearls, on
clinical practice tips. Jerry has received numerdontics:
Basic Principles And Practice (Elsevier. In
press).
When Dave stepped down from his position
with the Bulletin to become EIC of the Angle
Orthodontist, David Crouch, who had been one
of Dave's students at the University of Washington,
assumed the duties and served as EIC from
1989-1991.
