commercial artist to help me. State societies were just
coming along, so I had a separate section for them. I
also didn't think that well-known people got enough
publicity, so I got it into my head that I would give
them some. So I started the Profile of a President. Another
thing I instituted was the idea of " Pocket Pearls. "
It has always been amusing to me-you go to a big
national meeting, at least when I was a young man, all
these wonderful people are giving the great lectures.
Down the hallway in the bar some guy would say,
" Hey, Norm, let me show you something, " so he'd
reach in his pocket and he would say, " Have you ever
seen a wire like this? You ever try it this way? " Gees,
half the good stuff you got at a meeting was some
little thing like that. I called them " Pocket Pearls, " but
I couldn't get anybody to send them in, so I'd make
them up myself and I would give somebody credit.
If you look back through them, you'll find that most
of them are not real names (i.e., Jack B. Quick, DDS,
Candlestick, Nevada). Dr. Earl Johnson has started it up
again. Just some little thing like putting a disposal in
your sink instead of having to scrape the alginate into
the wastebasket. Have you got a disposal in your sink?
You should have one; it costs about $29.

Upon my appointment as
the seventh editor-in-chief
of the PCSO Bulletin, Dr.
Parker coached me well.
My first thoughts during
my tenure centered on
the purpose of the Bulletin.
How can we convey this
volume of vital information
in a condensed, organized,
and fluid manner?
Benefits from exploration
of the Bulletin's history included the ability to build on
the achievements of our predecessors and prevent
repeating past errors in judgment such as recreating
the wheel. The journal, of about 40 pages, seemed
small and was single columned with few photos and
a plain cover that included a list of some of the contents.
My vision of change initially focused on a more
eye-catching cover and photographs within. Now, to
be clear, I controlled the helm; however, the Bulletin
is produced by the selfless contributions of the three
section editors, business manager, officers, directors,
AAO, American Dental Association (ADA), standing
committees, advertisers, publishers, readers, and experts
in the dental community, including our specialty
and related fields such as periodontics and maxillofacial
surgery. Then, in May 1975, with the trends of the
time, critiques of the past, and my desire to improve
readability, increase interests, restrict bias where needed
(including advertisements), and balance the Bulletin
with articles on clinical cases, I added an area called
Dental Potpourri; it contained reports from the ADA
and so on. We implemented for the first time a major
change to the larger trim size and two-column format.
Considerable research confirms that two-column
pages read easier and often faster. In addition, they
afford more space for proper sizing and positioning of
photos and illustrations. Continuity and coordination
of text material with the figures are enhanced and
simplified by avoiding reference to other pages while
reading. This two-column formatting was further augmented
with an increase in trim size from 8³⁄₈'' × 5³⁄₈'' to
9⁷⁄₈'' × 6⁷⁄₈''; that was an increase of an inch and one half
in the Bulletin's height and width. Text type size was
more easily increased, where needed, to emphasize
areas. Advertisers were thrilled with the ability to have
full-page ads. The total issue page number increased
to 60 on average. We continued with the editor's
editorial in each of the quarterly issues of the Bulletin. I
produced 25 editorials during my tenure and included
topics such as clinical quality control, malpractice,
practice management, the future of orthodontics, and
teaching methods. Color was also considered; however,
the budget had limitations. In 1978, I was appointed
editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics
and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO) and led the way
to the same changes for that journal. I am proud of
what we accomplished for our specialty.

People always ask how I
happened to get involved
in editing orthodontic
journals, and I take great
pride in telling the story.
My initial involvement was
almost accidental, and I
can easily blame some
of my very best friends.
