After serving two years
as the northern region
editor, I was appointed
editor-in-chief at the 1988
PCSO Annual Session
in Honolulu, Hawaii: a
beautiful venue to begin
my three-year tenure as
editor-in-chief. My chief
goal was to not disturb an
award-winning publication
that the editors
prior to myself, and in particular David Turpin, had
developed and innovated. Dave was a great role model
for this young orthodontist, serving as one of my
faculty members at the University of Washington, my
journalistic mentor, and then later a faculty colleague
as he, Don Joondeph, and I taught Monday morning
seminars and clinic at the University of Washington
Department of Orthodontics for years.
The Bulletin continued the popular and recognized
sections of Case Reports, Portraits of a Professional, and
Practice Pearls. In addition, the backbone of the journal
was the Summaries of Scientific PCSO Presentations authored
by our incredible group of regional editors, Drs.
Patrick Turley, Harold Bergh, Owen Nichols, Rob Quinn,
Bruce Hawley, and Carol Anne Wishart. Our summaries
emphasized important clinical topics relative to the current
state of the specialty. At that time, providers were
beginning to see increasing numbers of adults seeking
orthodontic treatment, so many current presentations
and studies were focused in this area.
During my three-year interval, we printed 16
unique summaries regarding temporomandibular
disorders (TMD) presented by current worldwide
experts such as Drs. Charles Greene, Glenn Clark,
William Solberg, Jeffery Okeson, David Hatcher, Tore
Hansson, John Rugh, and others. Special articles
from PCSO region university theses featuring
TMD-related topics were also included. Eight presentations
from experts on periodontal-orthodontic
and interdisciplinary treatment were summarized
during these years. Numerous other pertinent
adult topics included recent advancements with
ceramic brackets, sleep apnea studies, and legal
topics from noted attorneys.
During my tenure as editor-in-chief, the PCSO was
extremely active in our specialty's issues on a national
arena. The AAO Annual Session convened within our
constituency twice: Anaheim in May 1989 and Seattle
in May 1991. In addition, the ADA convention was
held in Honolulu, Hawaii, in November 1989 and in
Seattle, Washington, in October 1991. PCSO members
were elected to head national leadership positions
with Dr. Art Dugoni serving as 1989 ADA president
and Dr. Gene Brain as AAO president in 1991. Since
the pandemic and increase of remote meetings,
I think we may all agree nothing can replace the
relationships and connections made from in-person
scientific and exhibitor-vendor conventions.
When planning one of my in-person interviews for the
Portrait of a Professional, I scheduled a meeting with
then PCSO president Dr. Don Joondeph in Seattle. We
decided to multitask the interview with watching a
World Series baseball game televised between San
Francisco and Oakland at Candlestick Park. Unfortunately,
Mother Nature had different plans for the evening of October
17, 1989: The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred, so
Don and I were glued to unfolding television coverage
of the tragedy and therefore suspended the interview. I
missed the deadline, but as editor I was able to extend it
to complete the needed information later. To quote Paul
Harvey, " Now, you know the rest of the story " !3
When I chose to step away after three years, the PCSO
leadership made a wise choice with Dr. Gerald Nelson.
He is a brilliant editor and made journal innovations
and advancements, especially regarding the rapidly
changing technology age. Our Bulletin continues
its unique and exceptional legacy with our current
editor-in-chief, Dr. Turley.
