Editorial
During my tenure as Bulletin editor, I kept my finger on
the pulse of our specialty to serve our readers. To " take
the temperature " of the educators in the 12 postgraduate
orthodontic programs in the PCSO, I commissioned
surveys that polled them on cutting-edge
topics. I also combined the Case Report pretreatment
and posttreatment sections and included American
Board of Orthodontics Discrepancy Index scores,
cast-radiograph evaluation scores, and videos in the
Case Report section. I worked closely with the Case
Report column editors to carefully select meaningful
case reports to provide our members with the
opportunity to share, learn, and discuss the treatment
of different types of malocclusions.
Currently, it is my honor to serve as deputy editor of
AJO-DO and the new clinical journal, AJO-DO Clinical
Companion, and as an associate editor of five major
orthodontic and dental journals, including Orthodontics
& Craniofacial Research.
Going Forward
There are 20 major orthodontic journals in the world
now, listed by the Strauss Health Sciences Library
at the University of Colorado. Do you think there is
some repetition? It is like sifting sand for truth in the
shifting sand of time. I am only aware of two journals
that have reached 100 years of longevity: the Bulletin
of the PCSO and AJO-DO. These certainly wave the
flag of success in communication and journalism.
Journalism, the bedrock of our publications, may be
defined as the unbiased production and distribution
of reports on current or past events based on
facts (data) and supported with proofs or evidence
(evidence-based or verified). Accurate, unbiased, verifiable,
and fair become the cornerstones of truth and
trust. This follows the rationale for the use of the protocol
of IMRAD in the presentation and publication of
manuscripts for the AJO/DO. With the proliferation of
the Internet, blogs, Facebook, and personal electronic
devices, the essence of peer review and consultants
has dwindled. Fortunately, we have the PCSO Bulletin
that can still have these experts in our specialty to
improve reporting accuracy and enhance credibility.
Articles that review, survey, or summarize, enlighten
members of our specialty, as well as editorials, letters
to the editor, and reports of analysis and opinion dealing
with social, political, legal, economic, and ethical
topics. The Bulletin can do it all!
