significant wins. One of the strategic plans objectives
is to " promote and defend our specialty. " Specifically,
to " mobilize AAO members to actively engage in
AAO's advocacy efforts to advance our regulatory, legislative,
and policy priorities. " To help foster increased
participation of AAO members in state/provincial and
federal advocacy, the Council has created a National
Advocacy Network with a network of key contacts
(Component Advocacy Liaisons) in each state/province
to lead efforts and develop tools to equip AAO
members to engage in grassroots advocacy. We had
more than 1,000 AAO members engaged on priority
federal and state/provincial campaigns this past year.
The AAO staff also recently added Ms. Kim VanVeen as
the grassroots and digital advocacy specialist.
Looking ahead, our advocacy will focus on a range of
issues, including teledentistry, workforce training and
shortages, small business initiatives, student loan debt
challenges, and addressing mail-order orthodontic
concerns related to patient health and safety. If you

Political Action Committee
The goal of the Political Action Committee (PAC) is to
leverage resources to grow AAO's federal network for
priority legislation and engage lawmakers advocating
on AAO concerns with existing or potential regulation.
The PAC is currently undergoing a comprehensive
relaunch with formal Pillars of Giving to strategically
guide the fund distribution process, establish
and measure official fundraising goals, and leverage
AAOPAC relationships with members of Congress to
influence AAO regulatory priorities. We were able to
secure members of Congress to request the Government
Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct an investigative
study on DTC oversight of medical devices
by the Federal Drug Administration and the Federal
Trade Commission, including orthodontic company
products. The GAO study commenced this past
summer, resulting from the AAO's advocating on the
importance of this probe into mail-order orthodontic
companies and the lack of oversight for patient health
and safety.
For the 2022 fiscal year, there were 369 contributors
to the PAC, with raised funds totaling $250,480.64.
The Professional Advocacy Conference will be held
February 28 to March 1, 2023, at the Hamilton Hotel
in Washington, DC. All contributors to the PAC
would have received an invitation to participate in
this event. If you are interested in attending, donating
