Alaska
With another epic Alaskan summer
in our rearview mirror, it is now the
season for continuing education
(CE), spending indoor time with
loved ones, and buckling down in our respective
practices.
Several members of the component were able to
attend the October Western Orthodontic Conference
(WOCON) meeting in San Diego, California. It was a
great opportunity to get out of the state, get some
sunshine, and attend some world-class CE.
Component leadership is looking forward to the
2023 annual meeting. It will be held in Anchorage,
Alaska, this coming March, and it will be an excellent
opportunity to see old friends and get some
quality CE.

Alberta
Alberta is holding a new and dedicated
event to educate and improve
the physical, mental, and financial
well-being of specialists in the field.
The 2023 Wellness Summit, a Canadian Dental Association,
Alberta Dental Association, and College of
Dental Surgeons of Alberta Joint Convention, will take
place June 15-17 at the Calgary Telus Convention
Centre. This summit will explore what it takes to create
a health dental community.

On September 7, the Arizona State
Orthodontic Association (ASOA)
board members, including the Arizona
director to the PCSO, Dr. Alyssa
Levin, had our final quarterly meeting and finalized
all details for our December Annual Session. We also
discussed other issues associated with the ASOA.
Members and nonmembers were invited to attend
the ASOA Annual Session on December 5. Our guest
lecturer was Dr. Michael Gunson, oral maxillofacial
surgeon from Santa Barbara, California. His lectures
were titled " The Face and Occlusion of a Bad Airway:
Growth Restriction, Compensation, and Esthetic Decline, "
" Orthognathic Causes of Mandibular Condylar
Changes, " and " Soft Tissue Sleep Apnea: A Reason Why
Hard Tissue Interventions Fail. "
This year, Arizona oral surgeons were invited to join
the lecture, including the University of Arizona oral
and maxillofacial surgery residents with their director,
Dr. John Gillis, and the A.T. Still University postgraduate
orthodontic program residents with their director
and chair, Dr. Jae Hyun Park. After Dr. Gunson's lectures,
we will have our annual business meeting.
Dr. Payam Owtad started conversations with the
Arizona Pediatric Dentistry Association to coordinate a
joint Pediatric Dentistry/Orthodontics meeting for our
Annual Session in 2023.
The Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH)
postgraduate orthodontic program continues to
thrive under the leadership of Dr. Park and Dr. Michael
Papademetriou. On November 5, under the direction
of Dr. Park, the ASDOH postgraduate orthodontic program
hosted an on-campus event with the Northern
and Southern California Angle Society. There were
more than 60 attendees plus the orthodontic residents
and faculty. The third-year residents graduated on
December 8, and they were encouraged and prepared
for the ABO Clinical Examination in February 2023.
The Arizona Study Group, under the leadership of Dr.
Jason Judd and Dr. Shawn Bader, had a great lecture
by Charles Loretto from Cain Waters & Associated on
