The Canadian Association of Orthodontists
(CAO) recently held their
annual conference in Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, with great success.
As the first CAO conference since 2019, there was an
added level of excitement and engagement at the
conference.
A recent regulatory issue arose in Saskatchewan when
a nondentist opened a " scan shop " inside a local mall
that was branded as an Invisalign store. With potential
violations in provincial dental bylaws around ownership
model, advertising as an Invisalign shop, and
paying for referrals, the College of Dental Surgeons
of Saskatchewan is looking further into the legality of
this type of " scan shop " operation.

The Washington State Society of
Orthodontists (WSSO) advised its
members during the summer of 2022
to become familiar with updated
sterilization requirements for slow-speed handpieces
as specified in WAC 246-817-655 and adopted by the
Washington State Legislature. Effective August 31,
2022, sterilization of low-speed handpiece motors
after use on a patient is required. Sterilization is not
required for those sections of a battery-operated
handpiece system that cannot be sterilized according
to the manufacturer's instructions.
The Dental Quality Assurance Commission (DQAC) is
currently considering requiring automated external
defibrillators (AEDs) for offices administering
anesthetics of any kind. The WSSO recently sent a
recommendation to the DQAC to exempt practices
using only topical anesthetic from being required to
have an AED.
The WSSO will hold our annual in-person meeting
on Friday, February 24, 2023, at the Meydenbauer
Center in Bellevue, Washington. Members should look
forward to an outstanding meeting that will include
lectures by Dr. Jason Cope and LeeAnn Peniche for
both doctors and staff members. Dr. Geoff Greenlee
will also conduct a hands-on training session for staff
members on cement removal with a handpiece. You
and your staff members will not want to miss this
meeting! We are excited for the opportunity to learn
from these lecturers and reconnect with professional
colleagues and friends from all over the state and
beyond.
