Efficacy of caries detection and characterization using near-infrared imaging technology in the
iTero Element 5D intraoral scanner in comparison to clinical-reference standard bitewing radiographs
in a pediatric population

Abstract
Near infrared imaging (NIRI) has been previously
shown to be effective as a non-ionizing alternative for
caries detection and is now an available feature on
the iTero Element 5D intraoral scanner (Align Technology).
This study tested the efficacy and reliability
of clinicians using NIRI for both caries detection and
lesion characterization in 344 non-restored posterior
tooth surfaces from a pediatric population. Lesion
characterization, or grading based on ICCMS guidelines,
was particularly unreliable for both bitewings
and NIRI, while solely caries detection was more
reliable, but still only moderately. When clinicians
had both NIRI and bitewing data together, reliability
increased considerably. NIRI had a high accuracy and
high specificity, but low sensitivity, similar to previously
published data on bitewings. Overall, NIRI appears
to be relatively comparable to BW as a diagnostic test,
however both tests have significant limitations that
are important to recognize.
Remarks about your experience at the 2022 WOCON
Presenting my research was a great experience and
helped provide a satisfying end to my thesis project.
It was nice to share research with clinical implications
with colleagues and see the positive reactions and
feedback from others. I also enjoyed getting to see
the other residents' projects and discuss and spend
time with them during the presentation settings. The
entire WOCON program had some fantastic presentations
and speakers, and I feel that I benefited greatly
from attending. I am very much looking forward to
future meetings!

External Apical Root Resorption of Maxillary Incisors following orthodontic treatment in patients
with Short Root Anomaly: A CBCT Study

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount
of external apical root resorption (EARR) secondary
to orthodontic treatment in patients with Short
Root Anomaly (SRA) using Cone Beam Computed
Tomography (CBCT) at the University of the Pacific
Orthodontic Clinic. Pre- and post-treatment CBCT radiographs
of forty-eight SRA patients who underwent
orthodontic treatment were selected and analyzed
to measure root length changes on the upper central
and lateral incisors. It was found that post orthodontic
treatment SRA teeth exhibited less linear changes
than non-SRA teeth and no differences were found
between non-Hispanic and Hispanic upper incisors.
Remarks about your experience at the 2022 WOCON
I had a great experience attending my first PCSO/
WOCON! A highlight was presenting research in the
posterboard competition alongside fellow orthodontic
residents and faculty members from programs
in our region. I found the information shared in the
lectures to be very valuable and I enjoyed connecting
with members of the orthodontic profession, both
familiar and new faces.
