Psychosocial Impact of Variations in Access to Orthodontic Treatment Among Medicaid Populations:
Oregon And Washington Patient Perspective
Abstract
Objective: To quantify the incidence of adverse psychosocial
circumstances experienced by children due
to financial inaccessibility of orthodontic care.

Methods: In accordance with IRB oversight, PHI data
were derived from orthodontic screening appointments.
Criteria for participation were children between
7-18 years who were insured through Oregon
Health Plan or Washington Medicaid. Questionnaires
were sent via physical mail, email, text, and QR code
to 1274 families. Data analyzed using frequency distribution
of binomial responses to survey questions.
Results: Preliminary data were derived from 32 respondents.
Amongst subjects, 31% reported feeling like an
outcast relative to their peers. Bullying was reported
by 28% of respondents. Thoughts of self-harm was
reported by 13% of subjects.
Conclusions: These preliminary data showed that limited
access to orthodontic care was associated with
adverse psychosocial circumstances that can affect
the welfare of children.

Presenting my research at WOCON was an incredible
experience! I was honored to be a part of advancing
our profession through this outlet. Having the
opportunity to answer questions regarding my
own research and learning about the research
happening in the field was very valuable. My peers
and colleagues on the west coast represent some
of the best in the profession, and I was proud to be
in the same space representing Oregon Health and
Science University!
