Dr. David Kennedy
Dr. David Kennedy passed away on September 9,
2022, from his battle with cancer.
Dr. David Kennedy
Dr. Kennedy attended
dental school at the
University of London in
the United Kingdom. He
obtained a scholarship to
study pediatric dentistry
in the United States at
Indiana University. After
completing his residency,
he returned to the United
Kingdom to teach before
eventually immigrating to Canada to practice and
teach pediatric dentistry. As part of the scholarship
repayment, he was invited to write a textbook in pediatric
operative dentistry. He completed an orthodontic
residency program at the University of Washington
to enhance his education and continued to work
with children, practicing both specialties. He became
the first person to be certified in two specialties in
Canada. He was the 2020 recipient of the PCSO Award
of Merit.
Dr. Kennedy founded one of the largest orthodontic-
pediatric specialty clinics in British Columbia and was
instrumental in founding and running the University
of British Columbia (UBC) orthodontic residency
program. He was a consummate professional and
lifelong educator, presenter, and mentor. He was fair
but demanding and embodied the high standards of
the Angle Society, of which he was a member of the
Northwest Component. He was a strong advocate
for board certification, both as an ABO member and
a Royal College of Dentists of Canada examiner. He
practiced for more than 45 years, and his favorite
piece of advice was the following: " Treat everyone as
though your toughest instructor would be evaluating
your work. Do your very best, every hour, every day,
every year. "
The UBC has set up a memorial fund in his name
for patients to receive financial assistance to obtain
orthodontic treatment in the graduate program-a
benefit to the residents and their patients. If you are
