3D Facial Scanners

Use of 3D facial scanning in dentistry has increased
as this technology has become more accessible. A
soft tissue scan included in the orthodontic patient's
records can aid in diagnosis, treatment, and posttreatment
assessment. Similar to digital models, a 3D facial
scan can be used to manipulate a digital patient in all
planes of space. Dental providers can diagnose and
analyze the dental, skeletal, and soft tissue characteristics
of these fully digital patients.
Types of 3D Facial Scanners
Computed Tomography
Computed tomography (CT) scans can capture the
3D soft tissue of the face; however, this technique is
expensive and delivers a dose of ionizing radiation
to the patient. A cone-beam CT (CBCT) apparatus is
readily available for dental and orthodontic offices,
and CBCT scans are often included in initial records.
CBCT will also capture facial soft tissue, but the quality,
color, and accuracy are limited.
Digital Calipers
With digital calipers, a probe physically contacts the
surface being scanned. The probe must touch the
entire surface of the face to collect enough data
and reference points to accurately create the digital
copy. Some digital caliper scanners are attached to
an articulating arm to improve control of the probe
and precisely capture angles and configurations. This

method requires the patient to remain still and is very
time-consuming, taking up to 30 minutes.
Laser Scanning
Laser 3D scanners are noninvasive and work by projecting
a laser onto an object. A sensor then captures
the millions of points that are reflected back. This
technique is based on the principle trigonometric
triangulation method, in which the sensor is set at a
fixed distance and can calculate the reflection angle
to create a scan with accurate points. Similar to the
digital caliper scanners, laser scanning is time-consuming
and could be more difficult for younger
patients.
