EDI Task Force Report
Engagement, Diversity, and Inclusion
Task Force Update
Our membership demographics are continually
shifting, and PCSO recognizes the importance of
responding to this shift to ensure representation
for all PCSO members. The health of our organization
depends on having policies, customs, and
social practices that welcome all members to our
organization, including mentoring members into
leadership roles.

Chair of the PCSO EDI Task Force
The Engagement, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Task
Force was created in 2020 and charged to rewrite
the PCSO Mission Statement and Core Values
through a lens of diversity and inclusion. This year,
the Task Force was asked to consider additional opportunities
to engage members. We were also asked
to identify EDI educational opportunities for our
members. We appreciate the support from the Board
of Directors, the Executive Committee, and PCSO Executive
Director Callie Castro as we work diligently to
address these challenges. Along with myself as Chair,
the EDI Task Force members are Drs. Mary Cooke,
Guneet Kohli Kainth, Clarice Law, Boyd Martin, Nehi
Ogbevoen, Mark Rashidi, Barbara Sheller, Mary Gabrielle
Thodas, Issac Tam, and John Trotter.
This past year, we produced several articles for the
Bulletin, including one on pronouns (spring issue) and
another on microaggression (summer issue). We hope
that this information is useful. We welcome your suggestions
for article topics and encourage you to reach
out to any member of the Task Force with questions,
comments, or concerns. We want to hear from you!
Your unique talents make PCSO what it is today and
what it will be tomorrow.

scanning more accessible by using the phone's light
detection and ranging (lidar) capability. Unfortunately,
only Apple devices with the TrueDepth camera
system and lidar technology are able to fully take advantage
of the scanning apps, and apps may not have
the same quality and functions as those provided by a
3D facial scanner.
Facial Scan Use in Orthodontics
A 3D facial scan of patients has many advantages over
a 2D photo. A 3D scan captures the facial anatomy
and can be viewed in all three planes of space,
allowing better analysis of facial symmetry and soft
tissue diagnosis. Facial growth and development can
be monitored when scans are taken throughout the
patient's growth phase and treatment. Analysis of
differences between the initial and final treatment
records can be used to assess the soft tissue changes.
In orthognathic surgery cases, a more accurate treatment
simulation can be achieved by overlaying the
facial soft tissue scan and the CBCT scan. These scans
can also be used to improve communication with and
motivation of the patient by providing a visual depiction
of the posttreatment surgery simulation.
Future
3D facial scanning technology will continue to advance,
and more scanners should be readily available
at more affordable prices. Although the use of facial
scans for diagnosis and for planning treatments has
increased, more studies on the accuracy, reliability, resolution,
and usability of this technology are needed.
