Trustees At Large, Dr. Anil Idiculla and Dr. Lauren
Pass, to the board. The Special Committee on
Inclusion and Engagement has also expanded
to include two additional members. The Special
Committee on Constituent Collaboration continues
to focus efforts on ways that constituents
can develop partnerships and become more
efficient.
Drive Transformation and Innovation
To this end, the goal is to have our association
explore partnerships, collaborations, and investments
that can add scale and speed to advancing
AAO's mission and vision. In the past year, the AAO
has partnered with the National Eating Disorder
Association (NEDA) to create a partnership to help
orthodontists and team members identify risks and
signs of eating disorders. It also recognizes that
food limitations are a part of normal orthodontic
treatment and provides guidance on how we can
best navigate this potentially triggering situation
for patients with eating disorders. This partnership
demonstrates that orthodontic care and visits can
play a vital role in a patient's overall health and
well-being.
We also want to position AAO as the global leader in
advancing innovation and technology in orthodontics.
In 2017, the AAO Board of Trustees convened a
task force to study the relationship between sleep
apnea and the practice of orthodontics. The research
and corresponding white paper were presented at
the 2019 Winter Conference, and we are updating
that white paper to stay current with the evolving
research in this area while also offering a multipart
webinar series on the topic. The American Journal of
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO)
now has a bimonthly publication the AJO-DO Clinical
Companion, which is a free online journal available
to all members. This publication helps to get more
research published in a timely manner, so that we
can continue to be the prime source of orthodontic
research and education.
The Business Development Task Force continues
to vet projects and investments to help foster
nondues revenue for the association and expand
member benefit programs. We also have continued
to support industry entrepreneurs through events
such as the Ortho Tank Pitch Event and the Ortho
Innovator Award.
There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to
work toward the same goals.
