As we have transitioned into the
new year, we would like to thank Dr.
Jonathan Yih for all his hard work
this past year serving as president
of the Oregon State Society of Orthodontists
(OSSO). We would also like to welcome in our new
president, Dr. Tylor Brekke. Our members attended
the AAO Leadership Development Conference and
are working diligently to build a strong, representative
set of board members.
On January 1, 2023, the Oregon Health Authority
announced they will be covering qualifying
handicapping malocclusions for youth 21 years and
younger who are enrolled in the Oregon Health
Plan. There are still many moving components with
its release, and we will continue to work closely
with the AAO general counsel in addressing these
concerns. However, this new bill will provide access
to orthodontics for much of the youth in Oregon
who previously had limited to no insurance coverage.
The OSSO will continue to work on clarifying
the screening process using the handicapping
labio-lingual deviation index and reimbursement
benefits throughout the year.

Our fall was interrupted by several
violations of ethical and public
misinformation. A private business
owner in Saskatoon decided to
open an " Invisalign " store in the largest retail mall in
the downtown core.
The business owner was a former spouse of a general
dentist in the city. In the " store, " iTero scanning of
the public was offered, and staff employed without
certified training for intraoral procedures, misuse of
the Invisalign trademarks without permission, social
media proclamations of being an orthodontist/
orthodontic specialist to the public, and misleading
advertising were the leading causes for concern.
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO)
executive jumped in to represent orthodontic specialists
lodging complaints to the College of Dental
Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CDSS).
Our local membership became very active, contacting
the registrar of CDSS and the president of CDSS
as well as petitioning our governing body with
complaints similar to the CDSS; one member called
the local police in an attempt to thwart the business
with an injunction/cease and desist.
Invisalign put a cease-and-desist letter into effect,
and the store was shut down by the landlord two
weeks after the doors were open.
Amanda Weir (Saskatchewan/Manitoba Align
representative) was a great liaison and was directly
involved in disseminating and advocating for her
specialist clients.
We thank the CAO, more specifically Dr. Ines Guedes
and Ms. Alison Nash, for their direct involvement
and advocacy toward a swift resolution of this very
sensitive and important topic.
This year, the Saskatchewan Society of Orthodontists
combined our Annual General Meeting with
that of the Alberta Society of Orthodontists in
an attempt to increase meeting attendance; this
gathering was held March 17 to 18 at the Fairmont
Banff Springs with many familiar faces such as Willy
Dayan, Lisa Davidson, and Moe Razavi.
